Lund University invites applications for the following position:

Doctoral student in Combustion Engines oriented towards PPC combustion in Heavy Duty Engine

The Division of Combustion Engines works with next generation engines with less environmental impact. To actively do something about the global emissions of CO2 and other green house gases we need to find a more fuel efficient engine for our vehicles but at the same time we cannot allow local emissions to increase. Div. of Combustion Engines are world leading in the fields of HCCI and the subsequent PPC engine technology. To this highly dynamic research group we are currently looking for four Ph.D. students.

Place: Department of Energy Sciences, Lund University
Ref nr: PA 2010/147
Starting time: as soon as possible

Work
PPC combustion in Heavy Duty Engine. One of the most promising concepts to achieve engines with high fuel efficiency and hence low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions is to apply the Partially Premixed Combustion, PPC, concept. With this concept fuel is injected rather close to top dead center, but with dilution in the cylinder there will be a delay before combustion starts. During this delay fuel and air mix to some extent and thus very fuel rich zones can be avoided. This prevents excessive soot formation as in a diesel engine. With correct settings we have also shown that NOx, HC and CO can be kept very low. Fuel efficiency for the PPC concept has been shown to be up to 57%. This project is funded within our center of competence combustion processes (kcfp.se) that will receive a new funding period of four years, starting 2010. During the current phase (2006-2009) PPC has been run in both small (Car) and large (Truck) engines and the concept has been demonstrated. However, much more work is needed to better understand the processes in the cylinder . This will be done in collaboration with research groups working with laser diagnostics and advanced combustion models.

Eligibility
Employment as a Doctoral student can only be granted if you have been accepted to the postgraduate student program. Acceptance to the postgraduate student program is based on the estimated ability to perform well in your postgraduate studies. This is also one of the basic criteria for employment. Furthermore you need a valid university degree at advanced level (MSc) within a relevant study program.

Qualifications
A suitable background for this position is M.Sc. (Civilingenjör) or equivalent. A background in engine processes can be suitable but is no requirement. Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Chemical Engineering or similar would be suitable specializations. We especially welcome female applicants.

Selection criteria
Selection to postgraduate studies is based on estimated ability to perform well in the studies. The evaluation of the ability to perform well is based primarily on the results of the studies on basic and advanced level, in particular:
1. Knowledge and skills relevant to postgraduate studies within this area, such as course work in aerosol physics, meteorology, and environmental science. This can be documented by appended documents.
2. Estimated ability to independent work and ability to formulate and solve scientific questions. This ability can be established, for example, based on a master thesis or in a discussion of scientific problems during a possible interview.
3. Skills in written and oral communication.
4. Other experience relevant to postgraduate studies, such as professional experience.

Other
For all four positions we will apply the same publication and travel rules as is in effect at the division now. These mean that all students get one “free” trip to a major international conference without presenting a paper and after that goes to meetings where the student makes an oral presentation of a paper written by her/him. The normal production for a student is 6-8 papers/presentations as first author within the framework of a Ph.D. Project. All students are also expected to take part in other activities closely related to their own and by that be co-authors of additional papers. The international conferences are located in USA, Asia (Japan mostly) and Europe. Within our wide international network we also send students for 1-6 month periods to companies or universities around the world. Examples during the last year are Toyota (JP), Caterpillar (USA), UC Berkeley (USA), Stanford (USA). This student exchange program is funded by the Vinnova VinnPro framework. Students within KCFP or associated projects will also give presentations for the industry partners twice per year in Lund and also at the industry locations. This means that a good personal network can be built during the Ph.D. Project and thus employment after graduation is highly probable. So far, everybody with a Ph.D. from the division has been offered a position in industry after graduation.

As a Doctoral student you will mainly be working with your research project, but you can also be given more general tasks within the department i.e. teaching, research and administrative work, in accordance with the regulations. Rules for employment as a Doctoral student is stated in "The Higher Education Ordnance (SFS 1998:80), Chapter 5".

Lund University encourages both men and women to apply for the position.

Salary is determined on an individual basis within certain guidelines for this type of position.

Your application should contain the following documents:
-Letter of application including the correct reference number, PA 2010/147, for the position. (The application should be written in Swedish or English.)
-Curriculum Vitae
-Copies of certificates and copies of any other document that you wish to include in your application.

Application
Application stating the reference number PA 2010/147 should be addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, and be sent to the Registry Office, Lund University, P.O.Box 117, SE-221 00 LUND Sweden (courier mail to be delivered at: Paradisgatan 5 C). Last day for applying:
