UK : Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Studentship Opportunities 2010-11

In 2009, Sussex was awarded a substantial number of doctoral and research preparation masters studentships for the following five years within an AHRC Block Grant Partnership award. Sussex was graded 'excellent' in terms of its postgraduate supervision and training.

Developing the research potential and impact of postgraduate students is integral to the University's vision of research at Sussex. Postgraduate students will also find dedicated support for their research and career development through Sussex's Doctoral School.

The Doctoral School is coordinating the AHRC studentships and now welcomes applications from suitably qualified candidates for a range of Masters and Doctoral programmes for the academic year 2010-11.

Please note the following:

1. You can only be nominated for one studentship by one university under the BGP scheme;
2. The list of awards above details studentships for 2010 entry, for which applications are currently being accepted. Available studentships for future years within the BGP award period (until 2013) will be posted in advance of the relevant admissions

Eligibility

Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals, and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes of full-time education.

EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees-only award, provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of their proposed programme of study.

Applicants must have gained an undergraduate degree from a recognised university, or be a current undergraduate expecting to graduate before 31 July 2010. Those applying for a doctoral award should normally have, or be studying for a Master's degree. Please note that if successful you may be required to produce evidence of your qualifications at registration.

Application process

All candidates for an AHRC award/nomination at Sussex must do the following:

1. Apply for a postgraduate place for the specific programme via the standard Sussex application method. This application must be made before the AHRC studentship deadline. Candidates submitting to the Sussex application process who have not already applied for a postgraduate place at the University will be deemed ineligible.
2. Complete an additional AHRC application form [DOC] and submit this to the Doctoral School. The same form can be used for both a Doctoral and a Research Preparation Masters award. This application form covers all the information required for Sussex to make a nomination under our BGP award.

The AHRC application form must be submitted to the Doctoral School via email or in hard copy, with AHRC BGP application clearly written in the subject line or on the envelope, by: 1200, Friday 5th March 2010

References

Applicants are advised that two references must accompany the application. These may be the same references you submit with your University Application if you wish.

However, competition for both Doctoral and Research Preparation Masters awards is fierce. Assessment panels in Academic Schools will be looking for a detailed appraisal of the applicant's academic development and suitability for the proposed subject and not a general statement of support.

You are therefore strongly encouraged to send a copy of your AHRC application form together with this Guidance for Referees sheet [DOC] for your referees to consider.

It is in the interests of applicants to consider the need for references as soon as possible to allow referees sufficient time to write a considered statement on your preparedness for masters or doctoral study.

Referees should submit their reference to the Doctoral School by the same deadline (5 March 2010). Email: doctoralschool@sussex.ac.uk.

Selection Process

Applications will be short-listed by panels in the relevant Schools, then checked by a Doctoral School AHRC BGP panel set up by the University which will then finalise nominations to be submitted to the AHRC.

Shortlisting panels and the BGP Committee will operate in accordance with the AHRC's Guide to Student Recruitment and Nomination. Panels will follow all relevant selection procedures and guidelines with regard to equal opportunities and will give equal consideration to full and part time, UK and EU, and prospective and continuing applicants.

You will be informed by the Director of Doctoral Studies in the Academic School to which you applied by the end of April whether (a) you will be nominated to the AHRC for an award (b) your name has been put on a reserve list, or (c) you have not been selected for nomination for an AHRC award.

Those applicants who are selected as nominated candidates will formally be required to confirm their acceptance of an award. Nominated candidates will be required to enter their details on 'Je-S'(web based portal used by the research councils) in April/May. Instructions on how will be sent out to those selected for nomination. The nominations will then be submitted to the AHRC in May 2010 for approval.

The AHRC will write to all the candidates who have been nominated for an award informing them whether or not they have been endorsed. It is anticipated that the vast majority of nominations will be endorsed.
