Denmark : PhD scholarship in IT and Natural Languages

Sponsored Links

The Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science (DIKU) and the Centre for Language Technology, Faculty of Humanities (CST) – both at the University of Copenhagen – invite applications for a PhD scholarship within the subject:

Automatic extraction of knowledge from language corpora

The scholarship is launched within the interdisciplinary research field of IT and natural languages, which combines computer science knowledge with linguistic knowledge. A large collection of written texts and spoken language (corpora) has been developed for many different languages including Danish. Marked corpora make it possible to develop and train machine learning algorithms and other statistical models which are capable of extracting knowledge from linguistic data. This knowledge can include syntactic and semantic information attached to individual words – e.g. their class or their meaning in a given context. It can deal with the syntactic structure – how to assign constituent or dependency structures to sentences. Finally, it can cover the contents of the written or spoken linguistic data – the contents is defined and represented very differently depending on the purpose and the model. In this project,
focus is on one or more types of extraction of knowledge, and the PhD student will work with relevant technological applications, e.g. development of lexical resources (dictionaries and word nets), teaching of grammar in connection with parsing or statistically based machine translation, extraction of knowledge for expert systems or teaching of dialogue response types of adaptive dialogue systems.

The PhD student will be part of the research group Human-Centered Computing (HCC) at the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science. (S)he will collaborate with and receive co-supervision from the Centre for Language Technology, Faculty of Humanities. HCC is an emerging interdisciplinary academic field broadly concerned with computing and computational artifacts as they relate to the human condition. The goal is to improve human interaction with IT. Research includes usability/user experience research; health care; information access and use; software development and programming; advanced interaction techniques. The PhD student will be enrolled at the PhD school of the Faculty of Science and be affiliated with GradEast – Graduate School in Linguistics.

Qualifications
Candidates should have an MSc degree in applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, or similar, with a solid mathematical background. Good programming skills are necessary, and experience with machine learning and/or human-computer interaction techniques is an advantage. The salary and appointment terms are according to the current agreement for PhD students. The appointment is for a period of 3 years and should lead to a dissertation.
