Europe : European Masters Program in Computational Logic

Sponsored Links

The European Masters Program in Computational Logic at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is organised as part of its Master of in Science Computer Science offer (Laurea Magistrale). The Master comprises 120 ECTS credits and lasts two years (including thesis). Each year's course is divided into two semesters. The courses of academic year 2010/2011 will start in October 2010. The continuation of studies towards the PhD doctoral degree is possible.

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites must be fulfilled by students applying for the Masters programme:

  • a three-year Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a comparable university-equivalent qualification (e.g., the Italian three-years Laurea).

Italian and European students with good grades who will finish the Bachelor study by the last application deadline (August) are also encouraged to apply early for this program.

  • language certificate in English. Since the medium of instruction in the Masters Programme is English, students whose first language is not English must demonstrate competence in English. If you are an English native speaker or you had your BSc in a pure English environment, the certificate is not necessary. We recognise many different tests. In the most commonly available, the following minimum scores are suggested:
    • TOEFL: 550 Points (computer based: 213, internet based IBT: 79); we prefer students to simultaneously take the Test of Written English (TWE).
    • IELTS: Level 6.0

  • good knowledge of the foundations of mathematical logic and/or artificial intelligence, for example by having attended a course on logic or artificial intelligence at bachelor level.

Application

If you fulfil the prerequisites, you may apply for the European Master's Program in Computational Logic using this application form. Please fill in the form and select (if you wish) a second university in the consortium where you would like to study. In addition, you are asked to provide us with THREE complete sets of application documents (one originally certified copy and two duplicates). Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

Your application must contain the following documents:

  • Application form
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Statement of purpose
  • Higher Secondary School Certificate / Intermediate Examination Certificate
  • Reports on university examinations (transcripts) and diploma (first degree or bachelor degree). If the bachelor degree will only be available after the deadline, students are required to send us a PRELIMINARY certificate. This document must be signed and stamped by the home university and give the information when the study will be finished and the final degree issued.
  • English language certificate as stated here
  • For Chinese and Vietnamese students only: The original APS certificate
  • For students already enrolled in one of the local Master's programs at FUB, UNL, or TUW only: an official statement proving that they are registerd within the local Master's program

Important: all copies of the original transcripts and degrees must be authenticated as true copies of the originals with a stamp and signature by an authorized institution (e.g., embassy, consulate, public notary). The accuracy of the attached English translation of the documents must be confirmed.
If you have problems with the above documentation, you may contact the
FUB EMCL Information Desk for clarifications.

Please mail all required documents to the address below (an online application procedure is in preparation and will open in April 2010):

  • 15 May 2010: deadline for EU- and non-EU-students; applications must be received at that deadline.
  • Students already enrolled at Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Technische Universität Dresden, Technische Universität Wien, or Universidade Nova de Lisboa in a local Master Program on Computational Logic can request to be transferred to the European Master's Program in Computational Logic before 31 October in their first year. Students must send the application documents (see above) to TUD. They are transferred if they meet the abovementioned eligibility criteria and the joint agrees of the commission.
  • All applications must be sent in paper form (three copies) and in English to the address mentioned above.
  • Please consider the deadlines for applications for scholarships and grants offered by the different institutions.

Scholarships & money support

The centralised nominal tuition/enrolment fees for the European Master in Computational Logic are 1,000€ for European citizens, and 3,000€ for non-European citizens, to be paid in two instalments after the beginning of the courses.

We offer many scholarships together with tuition/enrolment fee waivers -- see below. In order to have more information about scholarships and money support contact the FUB EMCL Information Desk.

  • Scholarships for all applicants.

    • The EMCL offers several grants of different types for all applicants. Students can apply for the different grants by means of the above EMCL Application Form. The joint commission will evaluate and rank the applicants. The scholarships/waivers will be granted to the best students.

      • Waivers: period: 24 months; the tuition/enrolment fee is waived.
    •

    • Only for students choosing the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano for their second year: the Italian site in Rome of the IBM Center for Advanced Studies supports scholarships to both EU and non-EU students of 500€ per month to work on a research project or on the thesis at their labs in Rome.
    •

    • Only for students choosing the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano for their second year: second year students may do their project and/or their thesis with a scholarship (up to 500€ per month) at the nearby universities Leopold-Franzens Universität Innsbruck (STI Innsbruck) and Università degli Studi di Trento. Check the BIT exchange programme web page.

  • Additional scholarships for European citizens.

Citizens from the European Union, or non-EU citizens with residence in the province of Bozen-Bolzano for at least one year, can apply to all the following kinds of scholarships in addition to the scholarships listed above. If you have any question about the scholarship application procedure for European citizens, or you need support for the application, please ask Ms Federica Cumer at federica.cumer@unibz.it.

    • only for students choosing the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano for their second year: a local ordinary scholarship (only for the year of study at FUB), which is granted purely on the basis of the yearly income of the applicant and of her/his parents or husband/wife, and it is up to 5,400€ per year. The scholarships are increased by 20% for students with excellent study achievements. The amount of the scholarship is a lump sum of 6,400€ per year for students with children. Students entitled to a scholarship are also entitled to the full reimbursement of the local university enrolment fees.

Students' support

Students will be fully supported by the International Relations Office. Its staff will give important information, will help with the enrolment procedure, applying for a residence permit and accommodation. The office is supported by some student helpers who act as tutors for students and show them around the university. FUB accommodates exchange students in the facilities for University students, managed by the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol; each year FUB reserves a number of rooms only for exchange students. The Language Centre provides language courses for students enrolled at the University, and for those on international exchange programmes, and it runs an advisory service for autonomous language learning, which takes place in its fully-equipped, flexibly run language laboratory. There are two different student associations: "Kikero" organises social events, student parties, trips and other activities; S.C.U.B "Sports Club University Bolzano" organises sports activities, particularly alpine sports like free-climbing, trekking, skiing. In addition we are planning to organise a yearly meeting of all students of the European Masters programme in Computational Logics at one of the partner institutions, where students can report on their experience, where we learn about best practice examples, where selected students can present the results of their project or master thesis, selected scholars and staff members present their latest research result, students are introduced to the local culture and students tell us about their culture. This event shall also serve to support the launch and the continued support of an alumni organisation.
