KTH School of Computer Science and Communication (CSC) announces a PhD student position in Biological Physics.

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.

CSC is one of Sweden’s most advanced and successful research and education institutions in Information Technology at KTH and Stockholm University. The activities of the school focus on higher education and research within the traditional core areas of numerical analysis and computer science; from theory building and analysis of mathematical models to algoritm construction, implementation and simulation. Other core areas of growing importance are technology and methods for the support of human communication and computer mediated cooperation over distances in time and space. The applied research includes scientific computing, computer science, computer vision, robotics, neural networks, human-computer interaction, media technology and graphic arts, and communication through speech, language and music. The PhD student will be employed at CSC Department of Computational Biology, an interdisciplinary department which conducts research in the two academic subjects Biological Physics and Computer Science. For more information, lists of staff, recent scientific publications etc see

The PhD student will be affiliated with the KTH Linnaeus center ACCESS

which is a leading international research center in the network sciences. ACCESS organizes many activities for its graduate students such as retreats, regular seminars, many workshops and conferences, and a broad interdisciplinary environment.

Project

The PhD student will work in the research group of Prof. Erik Aurell, in collaboration with Prof. Aurell's other research group at Aalto University, Helsinki Finland. For information on recent projects and publications, see

This is a four-year, time-limited position and normally includes 20% departmental duties, usually teaching. Research students must be registered at KTH. The salary follows the guidelines provided by KTH. The starting date is open for discussion, though we prefer the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.

Qualifications

A suitable background for this position would be a KTH Master of Science in Engineering Physics, or equivalent. This includes strong analytical and computational skills in traditional core disciplines such as calculus (multivariate and complex variables), linear algebra and computer science including programming, as well a suitable advanced (MSc level) education. Previous research experience, international experience and language skills are regarded as advantageous qualifications.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work
independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.
