Denmark : PhD fellowship WAUDIT Wake effects offshore wind farms

Sponsored Links

The Wind Energy Division at Risø DTU, Technical University of Denmark, is seeking a PhD fellow (student) to investigate the effects of large-scale wind farms on regional weather and climate. This PhD position is associated with the Marie Curie Initial Training Programme, WAUDIT. As part of the WAUDIT project, the PhD fellow will be involved in an international network of young researchers, all working within the general field of wind resource assessment. Applicants for this Fellowship should not be from Danish nationals or candidates who have lived in Denmark for more than one year out of the last three years. The Fellowship is only open to ‘Early Stage Researchers’ meaning that it is no more than four years since you acquired your Masters degree.

Job Description
The PhD project objectives are to investigate and develop methods for prediction of wind resources, including wake effects and atmospheric feedbacks, for scenarios where large portions of the sea are covered with wind farms such that a significant feedback to the wind climate must be expected. The project addresses to what extent the large wind farms affect the wind climate and the surface ocean circulation.

The project will develop techniques for upscaling the effects simulated by turbine and wind farm wake models into mesoscale atmospheric PBL parameterizations and perform simulations using these parameterizations to understand the feedbacks between the wind farms and the regional wind climate. The work will extend the current knowledge about wake effects from observations and small-scale models to the feedbacks that could occur in the atmospheric boundary layer, the atmosphere, and the upper ocean. The PhD fellow will be part of an exciting research environment at the Wind Energy Division, Risø DTU, which covers diverse and multidisciplinary topics within wind energy science and technology.

Qualifications
Candidates should hold a Master degree in meteorology/physics/engineering or similar educational level.  A theoretical background in boundary layer meteorology is desirable. Previous experience with scientific programming, computational modeling (in particular mesoscale modeling) and Linux systems would be considered an advantage. Experience with the ARW-WRF is a plus. You are expected to have good written and oral communication skills in English. To qualify for the Fellowship, you must satisfy the requirements of a Marie Curie Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) and also the mobility requirements, both as defined in the ‘Guide for Applicants’ that can be found at
cordis.europa.eu.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the
DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
As a Marie Curie Fellow you will receive a salary of approximately DKK 35000 per month including pension, mobility allowance and holiday pay.
