PhD project 1: Magnetic Hydrogels for Biomedical Applications (1,0 fte)

This project combines fundamental and applied research on novel hydrogels with tunable magnetic properties. Chemical synthesis techniques will be developed and material properties will be characterized using state-of-the-art colloidal and microscopic techniques. In collaboration with industry, the ferrogels will be studied for applications, in particular as a key component of novel biosensors that monitor human blood composition.

PhD project 2: Self-assembled cubicle membranes; inorganic colloids for novel membrane structures (1,0 fte)

This project is co-sponsored by Hyflux Ceramics (Singapore/Venlo) in a partnership program with STW. The aim is to develop porous inorganic colloidal cubes that self-assemble into dense arrays intended for membrane separation purposes. The research not only includes chemical synthesis of functionalized model colloids but also physical studies of transport properties of these novel structures.

While research will be the main activity (90%), the PhD students will also be expected to contribute to teaching (10%).  The research group will provide the necessary support on all aspects of the projects.

Qualifications

We are looking for dedicated researchers, with a MSc in (colloid) chemistry or materials sciences, who are motivated for this fundamentally oriented research, but who are also motivated to collaborate with other, more applied researchers.

Terms of employment

The candidates are offered a full-time position for 4 years. You are expected to have a PhD thesis written by the end of the fourth year.

The salary starts with € 2,042 in the first year and amounts to € 2,612 gross per month in the fourth year of employment (for a 1,0 fte position).
