Job description

In a large European research project, we investigate perception by touch. By learning from human data and hypotheses-driven simulations of system architectures for the “hand” as a cognitive organ, the ultimate goal of the European project is to design and control new and improved robot hands, haptic interfaces, and hand prostheses. Major topics in our project are feature saliency, perceptual integration and the study of exporatory procedures.

Touch is an important but relatively unknown modality. The aim of the proposed research is to gain fundamental understanding of touch by means of a systematic and extensive exploration. The approach will be characterized by a combination of physics and perception research.

The work will consist of designing new set-ups, running (psychophysical) experiments, analysing and modelling the data. With this research we will gain insight into underlying neurocognitive processes by testing novel hypotheses and by placing new and existing data in a theoretical framework. The work will be done in collaboration with our European partners. Depending on the background and interest of the candidate, a suitable subset of research questions will be selected.

 
Qualifications

University Graduate (MSc); We ask for a physicist with interest in experimental psychology, an experimental psychologist with shown mathematical capabilities or a neuroscientist with relevant interest and experience. Candidates are expected to disseminate the results through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences and European project meetings. We expect the PhD-candidate to finish a PhD thesis within the four year project period.

 
Terms of employment

The PhD-candidate is offered a full-time position for four years. Your gross salary starts with € 2.042,- per month in the first year and € 2.612,- in the fourth year of employment. The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3% per year.

In addition we offer a pension scheme, a partially paid parental leave, flexible employment conditions in which you may trade salary for vacation days or vice versa. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities.

The research group will provide the candidate with necessary support on all aspects of the project.
