Sweden : PhD position in Image Processing

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: PhD position in Image Processing at the Centre for Image Analysis.

Analysis and processing of three-dimensional medical images on optimal lattices

The Centre for Image Analysis (CBA) is a joint research entity between Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.  CBA was established to through research and development reinforce the knowledge needed for an operative and sensible use of digital image analysis in society. More information can be found at http://www.cb.uu.se.

Three-dimensional volume images are used frequently in medical applications today. With higher precision in the image acquisition equipment, storing and processing these images require an increasing amount of data processing capacity. Traditionally, three-dimensional images are represented by cubic (or cuboid) picture elements on a cubic lattice.

The two-dimensional hexagonal lattice has some advantages over the traditionally used square lattice. For example, fewer samples are needed to get the same reconstruction quality and it is less rotational dependent. A corresponding three-dimensional lattice is the body-centered cubic (bcc) lattice. In theory, almost 30% fewer samples can be used to get the same reconstruction quality when the bcc lattice is used compared to the cubic lattice.

Most three-dimensional image acquisition methods are based on tomography, i.e., the three-dimensional image is constructed by a stack of two-dimensional images, each acquired separately. To take full advantage of the high sampling efficiency of the bcc lattice, the image should be acquired as a full three-dimensional image. In this project, methods for image acquisition, analysis, and visualization will be developed for three dimensional medical images represented on the bcc lattice.

With the methods developed in this project, it will be possible to process three-dimensional images with 30% less data without affecting the image quality. Our intention is that this project will lead to faster processing of images with less demands on the data storage capacity.

Cooperation partner in this project is the Division of Radiology, Department of Oncology, Radiology and Clinical Immunology, Uppsala University.

Required Qualifications

A MSc or MEng or similar degree in science/technology with a focus on computer science and mathematics is a suitable background. Experiences from digital image processing is highly valued. Programming experience is important.

Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance and women are especially encouraged to apply.

PhD positions are primarily intended for the students’ own graduate education. In addition to research education, teaching or other duties at CBA to an extent of about 20% of full time is included in the position. Formal acceptance as a PhD student is a prerequisite for the position.

The application should contain a CV, high school and college transcripts, letters of recommendations, and a letter describing why you want to become a doctoral candidate and why this line of research appeals to you.
