Sweden : PhD student position Medical Sciences in Neuroscience for studies of vertebrate colour vision

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:

PhD student position Medical Sciences in Neuroscience for studies of vertebrate colour vision

at the Department of Neuroscience. The position is available immediately.

Project description: Colour vision arose in the earliest vertebrates. Subsequently, duplications of light-receptor genes facilitated evolution of more elaborate colour vision with different types of cones as well as the origin of dim-light vision mediated by rods. (Thus, colour vision arose before rod vision!) We have recently reported that many gene families underwent extensive duplications in early vertebrate evolution, thereby giving rise to the distinct signal transduction machineries in cones and rods. The present project aims to sort out the evolution of several gene families involved in vertebrate vision, both the light receptors (opsins) and the signal transduction components. Gene families will be analyzed by bioinformatics and by phylogenetic methods. The anatomical distribution of mRNA expressed by gene family members will be investigated in different retina cell types, primarily rods and cones, by in situ hybridization. This anatomical work will start in the zebrafish which is a well established model. The project will delineate how vertebrate vision evolved at the molecular genetic level, particularly how rods and different types of cones became highly specialized on distinct functions. This work has general importance for our understanding of the evolution of novel and specialized functions after gene duplications.

Qualifications:

The applicant shall have a basic academic degree (4-5 years) in medicine, biomedicin, biology, or other relevant fied. The applicant shall have a strong interest in, and adequate prior knowledge in molecular biology, neurobiology, signal transduction, evolutionary biology (particularly molecular evolution), bioinformatics and phylogenetics. The appointed applicant shall primarily pursue his/her own PhD training. Other duties in our department include teaching and administration, no more than 20% of the time. In order to be eligible for the position, the appointed applicant must be registered as a PhD student.

The rules governing this process can be found (in Swedish) in Högskoleförordningen 5 kap 1-7 §§. Local rules apply for salaries.
