Germany : PhD student position in Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research

The Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK,
http://www.ipk.gatersleben.de) conducts basic and applied research in the following key research areas:

Genetic Diversity of Crop Plants, Dynamics of Plant Genomes, and
Integrative Biology of Plant Performance.

The institute currently hosts about 500 employees and provides state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. In a DFG-funded projects , applications are invited for a

PhD student position (0,5 E13) (Reference number: 05/01/10)

in chromosome biology and genome evolution, in the research group Chromosome Structure and Function (head: Dr. Andreas Houben) for a period of 3 years, starting at the earliest possible date.

The aim of the project is to sequence analyze rye B chromosomes. This analysis will allow insights in the evolution of selfish chromosomes. We will use a high-throughput 454 sequence survey for comparative analysis of the repeat composition with other grass species, for an improved analysis of large genomes. For this task, a stimulating scientific environment, modern facilities and tools are available.

Highly motivated candidates, enthusiastic about the prospect of driving forefront research in an international team are encouraged to apply.
