UK : PhD Opportunities in Computing Science at University of Ulster

Postgraduate students in Computer Science are attached to one of four main Research Groups, namely Artificial Intelligence and Applications, Information and Communications Engineering, the Intelligent Systems Research Centre, and the Smart Environments Research Group. Applications for DEL and VCRS awards should be received by the Research Office on or before 26 March 2010. Other application deadlines are as advertised.

Vice-Chancellor's Research Scholarships (VCRS)
A number of University funded VCRS will be available in certain subject areas. Applicants for these awards must have or expect to obtain in Summer 2010 the minimum of an upper second class honours degree in a specific research area (as advertised). They will cover tuition fees and a maintenance award of not less than £13,489 per annum for three years (subject to satisfactory academic performance). Applications are invited from UK, European Union and overseas students. Only candidates who are new applicants to PhD will be eligible. VCRS awards are not available for applicants for any other research degree nor for any candidate who has previously registered for PhD nor anyone who has already obtained a PhD.

DEL Research Studentships (DEL)
The University has DEL research studentships available in many subject areas. These pay tuition fees and an annual maintenance award of not less than £13,489 per annum. Full awards are available only to applicants normally resident in the UK. Applicants for these awards must have or expect to obtain in Summer 2010 the minimum of an upper second class honours degree in a subject area appropriate to the project.

Applications will be considered in areas of economic relevance, namely agri-food, life and health sciences, advanced materials (including clean technologies), engineering, ICT, electronics, software engineering, construction (including clean technologies), creative media and financial services. In considering applications, account will be taken of engineering and technology, mathematical sciences and biological sciences which, as evidenced in the STEM report,  are particularly under-represented at doctoral level graduation in Northern Ireland.

 

DEL CAST Awards
These are awards co-funded by the Department for Employment and Learning and industry in specific approved project areas. Project titles will be advertised in appropriate local and national media as they become available. Full awards are available only to applicants normally resident in the UK. The average maintenance allowance for eligible students in receipt of CAST awards will be not less than £15,000 per annum. Applicants for these awards must have or expect to obtain in Summer 2010 the minimum of an upper second class honours degree in a subject area appropriate to the project. (
