UK : PhD Opportunities in Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials

The Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials Research Institute brings together a multi-disciplinary group of staff from a range of disciplines to undertake various forms of advanced materials research, including such topics as composites, materials characterisation, sensors, biomaterials, plasma processing, metal forming, nanoscience and nanofabrication. Strong International collaborations have been developed and large infrastructural and project funding has been a highlight of this rapidly growing research area.

Postgraduate students in Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials will most likely work in one of the three main Research Groups or Centres, namely the Nanotechnology and Integrated BioEngineering Centre, the Engineering Compostites Research Centre and the Advanced Metal Forming Research Group.

DEL Research Studentships (DEL)
The University has DEL research studentships available in many subject areas. These pay tuition fees and an annual maintenance award of not less than £13,590 per annum. Full awards are available only to applicants normally resident in the UK, eligibility criteria for this award can be found
here. Applicants for these awards must have or expect to obtain in Summer 2011 the minimum of an upper second class honours degree in a subject area appropriate to the project.

Applications for DEL and VCRS awards should be received by the Research Office on or before 18 March 2011. Other application deadlines are as advertised.

Vice-Chancellor's Research Scholarships (VCRS)
A number of University funded VCRS will be available in certain subject areas. Applicants for these awards must have or expect to obtain in Summer 2011 the minimum of an upper second class honours degree in a specific research area (as advertised). They will cover tuition fees and a maintenance award of not less than £13,590 per annum for three years (subject to satisfactory academic performance). Applications are invited from UK, European Union and overseas students. Only candidates who are new applicants to PhD will be eligible. VCRS awards are not available for applicants for any other research degree nor for any candidate who has previously registered for PhD nor anyone who has already obtained a PhD.
