The Department of Human Nutrition and Department of Basic Sciences and Environment at the Faculty of Life Sciences, has a vacant position for a Ph.D. fellow in chemistry and nutrition from February 1, 2010 until January 31, 2013 or January 3.,1 2014 for fellow following the so-called ?4+4 programme?.
 
Job description
With reference to the project manager, the work of the Ph.D. fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development The position is part of a new Danish project, UNIK- Food, Pharma and Fitness for Health and Disease in the area of food and metabolic signalling (http://foodfitnesspharma.ku.dk/ ). Our task within this project is to chemically synthesize a number of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and to set up analyses of these compounds and their metabolites in samples from humans and rodents by LC-MS. Moreover the PhD student must plan and participate in performing rodent and human studies with foods having high levels of AGE. Signalling and receptor expression will be among the endpoints targeted. The work will include research, classroom teaching, and supervision of B.Sc. and M.Sc. students. This work will be done in collaboration with several groups in Denmark and internationally. We seek a new PhD student with a background in synthetic chemistry or food chemistry and with documented experience in several of the following areas:
 
  • Bioorganic chemistry and chemical synthesis
  • LC-MS analyses (Quadropoles and/or Q-TOF)
  • Food chemistry or chemistry of natural substances
  • Protein chemistry and molecular biology
 
Qualification requirements
In connection with the appointment to the post special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below:
 
  • M.Sc. or equivalent level of education and experience from work with spectroscopic data (for ordinary 3-year PhD), or a B.Sc. for a 4+4 year programme.
  • Experience with chemical synthesis
  • Interest in biomarkers and in preventive nutrition
  • Initiative and good collaborative abilities
 
The Ph.D. fellow is also required to have research potential, to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills.
 
Terms of employment
The post will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.
 
The position as Ph.D. fellow requires the applicant to be approved for admission to the Ph.D. programme at LIFE when accepted for the post.
