At Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, Department of Energy Technology a position as Ph.D. fellow (position no. 562/06-14-28058G) is open for appointment from 1.5.2010.

Job description:

State Monitoring and Online Control Optimisation

The stipend is available within the general study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering and within the field of Power Electronics and Drives. The stipend will imply cooperation with the company Danfoss Drives.

To optimise the performance of a system involving variable speed drives, it is important to have detailed knowledge of the characteristics and conditions of the primary components in the system, e.g. the motor, the load and the link between them. Today, it is common to enter motor nameplate data into the drive and/or to use the drive to determine motor data values prior to proper operation of the system. Since this can be a long and tedious process (especially on large motors), and since motor data may shift during operation, it would be valuable to be able to update motor data online or "on the fly" and thereby allow for online optimisation of the control of the motor. Likewise, one can think of the drive-motor combination as a means to acquire online data on how the system is operating, its current state, load characteristics and system dynamics. These data are relevant e.g. for minimising energy consumption, wear and noise and for optimising system throughput. It is the objective of this project to study observability of various drive systems (from the drive's perspective), develop rational methods for online acquisition of system data and to demonstrate the use of these data in an optimised control system.

As a PhD student, you will be a member of a research team including the leading industrial manufacturer Danfoss Drives and a high level university research environment with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. Close cooperation between the PhD student and senior researchers as well as knowledge exchange with the industrial partner is expected.

Qualification requirements:
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

Appointment and salary acc. to the Ministry of Finance Circular of January 11, 2006 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the Ministry of Finance Circular of June 13, 2007 on the employment structure at Danish Universities.
