The Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry (ST) is one of the nine departments of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). It was established in 1957. The department has approximately 500 employees (411 fte), 13 full professors, 370 undergraduate students (bachelor and masterstudents) and about 170 graduate students (140 Ph.D. and 30 design engineers).The department aspires to be an academic institution for education and research in chemical science and engineering that meets the highest international standards. The aim is to generate and to develop technology and scientific knowledge relevant for the long-term needs of society. Scientific curiosity and the use of newly generated knowledge are the main driving forces for the continuing enhancements of the three chosen fields of expertise: molecular, materials, and process engineering.

Description of the project:
In our department of Functional Materials and Devices  at the Eindhoven University of Technology we have a position open for a PhD student. The projects is financed by the Dutch Technology Foundation and is done in collaboration with the Optics group at the Delft University.
The project involves working with reactive liquid crystal materials and their polymerization using polarized light. Compositions will be studied to optimize on phase behavior, molecular alignment and photosensitivity. Localized laser curing using a dedicated optical set-up will provide structures of nanometer dimension which will be characterized on their relevant properties such as resolution, etch resistance, mechanical performance, etc.
The nature of work is a combination of chemistry (not synthesis) and physics and involves the use of analytical equipment such as X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter, FTIR, polarized UV-VIS, polarization microscopy, atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy (both SEM and TEM), etc.

Candidates with an M.Sc. degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, process technology, or related disciplines are invited to apply for this position.

We offer:
• A challenging job at a dynamic and ambitious University;
• An appointment for four years;
• Gross monthly salaries are in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities (CAO  NU), increasing from € 2042 per month initially, to € 2612 in the fourth year;
