Austria : Max Perutz International PhD Program Molecular Life Sciences

Sponsored Links

The Max F. Perutz Laboratories are inviting applications from talented students all over the world for our graduate program. The institute is located at the Vienna Biocenter Campus - a major European science hub - and will provide a rigorous and comprehensive PhD education. Our research covers the full range of the molecular biosciences, exploring life at a cellular, molecular and atomic level.

The Perutz labs have an open, collaborative environment with PhD students already representing more than 40 nations. The working language is English, and no prior knowledge of German is required. The city of Vienna is currently ranked as the best in the world for quality of life (Mercer 2010 Quality of Living Survey). It is a city of exciting contrasts, with both a rich cultural heritage and a vibrant contemporary way of life.

This year’s summer selection is co-organized with the special doctoral programs in Cell Signaling, RNA Biology and Structural Biology. These are the flagships of MFPL PhD training and mentoring, with the goals of promoting creativity and fostering independence in young scientists.

The Max F. Perutz Labs are a joint venture of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna. All PhD students are employed with a highly competitive salary according to the guidelines of the Austrian Research Fund (FWF). Applications to the program are open to holders of a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in the biosciences, chemistry or medicine. Applicants from related fields will also be considered. Students will be selected following a 4-day interview process.

Admission

The program is open to students who hold a Master’s degree in the biosciences, chemistry, medicine, or related fields, or expect to finish their master study before the end of 2011.

Admission to the MFPL Graduate School is competitive, and solely carried out through a centralized selection procedure. Please note that applications can only be accepted via the online application system within the announced deadline. Late or incomplete applications are not accepted. In case there are major time gaps in your career, please specify them.

We strongly encourage applicants from non-European countries* to submit a GRE® - Graduate Record Examinations – score. Though not obligatory, it does help us to evaluate your application more fairly. When applying, you may submit a copy of the official record. Find out more about the GRE here (link to http://www.ets.org/gre/).

Your participation during the interview procedure in Vienna is essential if you wish to be considered for admission to the program.

Evaluation of applications

The first evaluation takes into account the applicants’ national education system, and is carried out by a committee of MFPL group leaders. Applications of candidates which meet the requirements are recommended for further assessment by the Selection Committee, which jointly shortlists the candidates to be invited for a 4 days’ period of interviews in Vienna. Invitations are sent 5-6 weeks in advance.

The interview in Vienna

Each candidate will first be interviewed by a Selection Committee consisting of at least 3 faculty members. This committee evaluates the overall qualifications of the candidate. The candidates are expected to give a 15-minute presentation of their Master thesis and a 15-minute presentation/critical analysis of one of the papers on the list that will be sent together with the invitation. Furthermore, questions will be asked about the candidates’ background and research interests.

Based upon this first assessment, the top-ranked candidates are invited to proceed to individual interviews with with the group leaders of their choice.

Offers of admission

After the individual interviews, the candidates name their preferred research group. Admission is granted if the group leader, on his or her part, is willing to offer the position to the candidate.

The starting date will be agreed with the group leader. Selected candidates are expected to accept the offered position in writing within 3 weeks and start within 6 months after the selection.

Deadline for applications: 27 March 2011
