The department of Industrial Design (ID) of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), founded in 2001, is a rapidly growing department with over 550 students, both Bachelor and Master, and around 200 staff members. With a strong emphasis on research the ID department focuses on the design of intelligent products, systems, and related services. These innovative systems and products enable people to interact with their environment in an optimal and flexible way. The TU/e ID engineer, who has developed a wide range of competencies during his/her education, is capable of integrating technology, user aspects, design and business/marketing insights. This MSc-program is practice oriented, capable to deal with and aware of relevant issues as formulated by industry and society at large. Ambient Intelligence and Cultural Computing draw special attention within the TU/e and ID particular, and is an important research and application field. ID encompasses four areas: Technology covered by the Designed Intelligence (DI) group, User aspects, covered by User-Centred Engineering (UCE) group, Design, covered by the Designing Quality in Interaction (DQI) group, and Business, covered by the Business Process Design (BPD) group.

Program structure

Course work

The program starts with fourteen months of multidisciplinary course work. The course work is structured into modules of two weeks in which topics from different disciplines are taught, e.g. user experience, interaction technologies, user research methodologies, user interface system technologies and understanding user needs. This part of the curriculum includes interactive workshops, working lectures, practical training, individual and group assignments, self-study, experiment set-ups and laboratory work for design and evaluation. Furthermore, professional development courses are an important part of the curriculum.
In the last part of the regular curriculum students work in small project teams on a design case, in which they apply their knowledge and skills to a concrete problem from a project outside the USI program.

 Project

In the second part of the program students work nine months as independent professionals on a large project assignment in industry. These projects are defined and conducted on demand in companies or institutions. They are supervised by coaches from the host organization and the university.

Career perspective

USIs are trained in user-centered design methodologies. They focus on preventing user problems and are equipped with knowledge to come up with solutions that support users at work or at home with their information, communication and  entertainment activities. In short, the USI designer's field of work is the design and development trajectory of user system interactions for new products, services, and systems. With this background, such designers become part of multidisciplinary design teams within industry, business services, or government institutions.
Examples of positions: usability engineer, usability consultant, human factors engineer, information architect, customer insight specialist etc.

  • like to be at the forefront of enabling technologies and want to exploit these technologies from the perspective of the end-users
  • are challenged by engineering problems and real-world constraints.

Eligible students have a Masters degree in the Engineering or Behavioural Sciences (MSc's and MA's), e.g., computer science, business engineering, mathematics, psychology and cognitive sciences, industrial design. Practical experience is an asset.
We require that students in our program have excellent social and communicative competencies, including sufficient proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and comprehension of English.

What do we offer?
