Project: Salmon Price Volatility
During the two previous decades salmon farming has emerged as a highly successful aquaculture industry. However, while predictability has increased in the production process, prices are still highly volatile. This is true despite the fact that an increasing share of the sales are carried out using contract prices and financial derivatives. There exist a number of hypothesis with respect to which factors are influencing the volatility, founded in the industry’s close interaction with the environment as well as more traditional factors in commodity markets.
The candidate will test different hypotheses with the objective of obtaining better knowledge about salmon price volatility. The successful applicant is expected to have a strong background in times series econometric and volatility modeling, as well as a theoretical basis in microeconomics. Knowledge of commodity markets and in particular the salmon market is an advantage.
