Politecnico di Milano is ranked as one of the prominent European universities in Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design, and in many disciplines is regarded as the leading research institution worldwide. Research at Politecnico di Milano has therefore an inherent international scope. Doing research at Politecnico di Milano means to participate into research projects with an international dimension and having the opportunity of being involved into global networks of academic institutions and industry.

In this framework, Politecnico welcomes foreign candidates to its doctoral programs as well as visiting doctoral students.

Below, a few guidelines for foreign candidates are provided. These guidelines are generic for all Doctoral Programs of Politecnico di Milano. Please, consider that the specific context (in terms of number of available positions, financial support, etc.) may vary considerably among the different Doctoral Programs of Politecnico di Milano. Therefore we warmly encourage foreign candidates, in order to achieve information on the situation or specific admission requirements of the Doctoral Program they are interested in, to contact the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program, before submitting their application. The e-mail addresses of the Coordinators of Doctoral Programs are provided in the section on the Degree Programs.

Please, consider that candidates applying under the framework of a specific International Agreement between Politecnico di Milano and a foreign institution must follow the admission procedure defined into that Agreement.

All candidates must have a good command of English. Knowledge of the Italian language is not mandatory at the moment of application, but we expect them to learn it during their staying in Italy.

All the documents presented may be in Italian or English. Official documents (certificate of nationality, certificate of residence, degree certificate, exams taken and marks awarded), must, if written in any other language, be accompanied by an Italian or English translation.

The application procedure is described in the notice of the competitive examination and can be summed up as follows:

  • candidates with a graduate university degree (five years of study after high school) can apply for admission by filling in the application form

The evaluation of all candidates, national or international, will be based on:

  • curriculum vitae
  • letter of motivation for the choice of the specific phd course
  • research project proposal in the field of the specific phd course chosen

Scholarships and financial support

There are two ways of enrolling in the Doctoral Program: by obtaining a scholarship or by paying a tuition.

Scholarships are available for more than half of the Doctoral Programs. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of the candidate's ranking based on the qualifying examination results.

For details of Scholarships in each program, view the official call
It is important to note that the Doctoral Programs require compulsory attendance. Therefore, candidates with major outside commitments will find it extremely difficult to complete the Doctoral Program and obtain the Ph.D. degree.

Please, note that students (with or without a scholarship) may find further financial assistance in the form of research and teaching assistantship. Usually doctoral candidates participate in the research activities of the Departments and may help professors in teaching at graduate and undergraduate level in specific study areas. Students can obtain information on opportunities for further financial assistance by contacting the Coordinator of the Doctoral Programs before proceeding to register (this applies particularly to students with no scholarship or other financial assistance).

Doctoral Programs provide resources for the development of research activities (laboratory, study space, access to library, funds for attending conferences and for research trips, etc.).

As to accommodation, please, note that there is a limited availability of rooms specifically dedicated to foreign PhD students at the student dorms of Politecnico di Milano. Candidates who are interested in this opportunity must contact the Coordinator of their PhD program before January.
