Netherlands : PhD position at the Climate Services Division of the Royal Netherlands

Job opening at the Climate Services Division of the Royal Netherlands
Meteorological Institute (KNMI).

PhD position

Generating dynamically consistent future climate scenarios under persistently anomalous atmospheric circulation

General information
KNMI is the national centre for data and knowledge on weather, climate and seismology. KNMI performs scientific research at a recognized high international level. One of the central themes is climate change. KNMI constructs climate scenarios of future climate which are used is society to adapt to possible climate
changes. KNMI uses observations, complex numerical climate models and scientific knowledge for that purpose.

Job description
Regional climate change is a superposition of the global change, changes in the atmospheric circulation and local feedbacks. For instance, an increased frequency of easterly winds during summer will warm western Europe more than the increase of the global-mean temperature will explain. While the increase of globalmean temperature is relatively well predictable, climate models disagree on changes in the large-scale circulation, making regional climate predictions less reliable. The candidate will use the KNMI state-of-the-art climate model to investigate weather characteristics of a possible climate in 2050, taking into account circulation changes by forcing the model to reproduce, in a dynamically consistent way, the desired circulation change. Furthermore, the candidate will assess feedbacks which arise due to the persistently anomalous circulation. The project is part of the Knowledge for Climate Program
(
www.climateresearchnetherlands.nl). This is a demand-driven program to develop regional climate adaptation strategies.
The candidate will work at the Climate Data Services Division of KNMI, supervised by Dr. G. van der Schrier in collaboration with Dr. A. Sterl and Dr. J. Barkmeijer.

Qualifications
You have a Master degree in a natural sciences discipline and are well acquainted with statistical analysis and meteorology. You have experience in working with large datasets and numerical models. Preferably, you have some knowledge of a computer language like FORTRAN. Scientific research has your interest and you need to have a thorough knowledge of English in speech and writing.
