Netherlands : PhD researcher Catalysis for Renewable Chemicals: Making Butadiene from Sugar Alcohols

The goal of this Catchbio project is to produce the major bulk chemical butadiene from renewable resources such as bio-ethanol and non-fermentable sugars. Butadiene is the main precursor of synthetic rubber and is also used for various plastics and polymers, such as polyamides. The project is a collaborative effort between Utrecht University (Weckhuysen/Klein Gebbink groups) and Wageningen University and Research Center (Van Es/Van Haveren groups). The PhD researcher in the Klein Gebbink group in Utrecht will focus on the preparation, characterization and testing of new homogeneous catalysts for the conversion of sugar alcohols into butadiene. The project will include both the design and synthesis of new organometallic complexes, as well as their catalytic testing.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Master’s or equivalent degree in synthetic chemistry, preferably organometallic chemistry with affinity for homogeneous catalysis.

The candidate will be offered a full-time position for 4 years.

The salary starts at € 2,042.- in the first year and amounts to € 2,612.- gross per month in the fourth year of employment (for a full-time position).

The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3% per year. In addition we offer: a pension scheme, a partially paid parental leave and flexible employment conditions.
