The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) offers the following PhD-position: Experimental analysis of 3D industrial heat-transfer systems (V34.1151, at Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, Department of Applied Physics.

The Department of Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology has 15 professorial chairs with about 65 academic and 60 technical specialists, as well as 110 graduate and 375 undergraduate students. The leading research themes cover functional materials, transport physics, and plasma physics and radiation technology. The department has extensive national and international partnerships, including industrial partners. It participates in several national (top) research schools, and in two national top technology institutes: Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) and Materials Innovation Institute (M2i). Eindhoven University of Technology is one of the three participants in the Dutch 3TU Federation of Universities of Technology.

PhD-project Laminar heat transfer occurs in many industrial fluid systems of size extending from microns to meters. Examples range from thermal processing of viscous fluids via compact heat exchangers to rapidly emerging fields as micro-fluidics and lab-on-a-chip applications in molecular analysis and biotechnology. Profound insight into laminar heat transfer is imperative for further technological developments yet remains limited to date. Key objective is in-depth thermal analysis of representative 3D systems by dedicated laboratory experiments using the state-of-the-art measurement techniques 3D Particle-Tracking Velocimetry (3DPTV) and 3D Laser-Induced Fluorescence (3DLIF) for resolution of the 3D internal flow and temperature fields. Goals:

  • design and realisation of a dedicated laboratory set-up for flow and thermal analysis;
  • experimental characterisation of Lagrangian mixing properties using 3DPTV;
  • experimental characterisation and optimisation of heat transfer using 3DLIF;
  • performance tests of optimised 3D heat-transfer systems in industrial test facilities.

This project will be performed in collaboration with the PhD-project Lagrangian analysis of heat transfer in 3D industrial systems at Energy Technology Laboratory, Dept. Mech. Eng. (V35.1148).

Requirements:

Recent or impending MSc-degree in Physics or Mechanical Engineering with special focus on heat transfer and/or fluid flow; proven experience with: design and performance of laboratory experiments, utilisation and development of advanced velocimetry and thermometry methods as (3D)PTV and/or (3D)LIF.

Employment Conditions:

The appointment is for four years. As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent secondary benefits (holiday allowance, etc.). The research in this project must be concluded with the attainment of a PhD degree. A salary is offered starting at Euro 2042.- per month (gross) in the first year and increasing up to Euro 2612.- per month (gross) in the last year. Moreover 8% bonus share (holiday supplement) is provided annually, as well as a 8.3% end of year allowance. Assistance for finding accommodation can be given.  TU/e offers you also the opportunity for personal development by developing your social and communication skills. We do this by offering every PhD student a series of courses that are part of the Proof program an excellent addition to your scientific education (Proof program).
