Denmark : PhD Scholarship at Department of Electronic Systems

At the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, Department of Electronic Systems a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Wireless Communication. The stipend is open for appointment from July 1, 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description
In conventional wireless communication systems, any user is connected to a single access point (AP) via a wireless link. Each AP operates independently from the other APs. Thus, the signal sent from an AP to a user inside its cell might also be received by a user in a neighbouring cell. This gives rise to the main limiting factor in today’s wireless communications: inter-cell interference. Coordinated Access Points is a new architecture where the APs are connected to each other and coordinate their operation. More specifically, the APs are connected to a central control unit through a high speed wired connection. The control unit coordinates the operations among APs and centralizes all the computations necessary for the communications. Because the APs are coordinated, inter-cell interference is reduced: communication failures are avoided and data rates to users dramatically increase (roughly speaking if two APs coordinate, the user could expect doubling of its peak data rate). Coordinated Access Points are also called network Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) or distributed MIMO systems as the coordinated transmitters form a distributed multiple antenna transmitter and the multiple receiving users form a distributed multiple antenna receiver.

The purpose of this PhD is to investigate solutions to organize an efficient and low-cost distributed communication to multiple users. The PhD study will include part or all of the following points (but is not limited to):

- distributed MIMO schemes: transceiver structures for distributed transmitters and receivers, precoding with QoS.

- resource allocation: space, time, frequency sharing among users.

- synchronization

- appropriate propagation models

The candidates are expected to be highly motivated and have a solid mathematical background. They are expected to possess sufficient prerequisites in all or some of the following fields: wireless communications, signal processing, probability theory, information theory and communication theory. The candidates will be evaluated by a committee based mostly on the following elements: Curriculum Vitae, motivation letter, PhD plan, grades (Masters and Bachelor), publication list (the candidate might include significant papers), recommendation letters. The PhD plan should contain the research topic(s) the candidate wishes to investigate.

The PhD scholarship is financed by the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation.

You may obtain further information from Post doc Elisabeth De Carvalho, Department of Electronic Systems, phone +45 9940 7528 concerning the technical aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
