First Phd Position No. 562/06-14-10049

At the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, Department of Energy Technology a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from August 1, 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description
The PhD position is part of the Vestas Power Programme 2008-2013 project funded by Vestas Wind Systems A/S and Aalborg University, Department of Energy in the field of power electronics, power systems and energy storage.

The generic content of the PhD programmes is as follows:
High voltage power converter for large wind turbine
As wind power plants grow to several hundred megawatts, and turbines grow towards 10MW, the optimum power conversion and power collection concepts will increase the voltage level. It is therefore of interest to investigate how future wind turbines can employ power electronic conversion at 10kV or even higher voltage. The project must compare megawatt & kilovolt power conversion topologies, and identify the most promising candidates for wind turbine application. The project will identify suitable converter semiconductor valves & drive circuitry, modulation, control & protection concepts, ac filters and harmonic reduction, and in particular HV insulation and short-circuit protection. Simulations, design, laboratory prototyping, test & verification will be integral to this project.

The objectives of this programme will include:
Identification of the optimum power-voltage rate with regard to efficiency and reliability
Identification of the right topology and devices
Modulation
Prototyping and verification
Key topics: HV IGBTs, HV materials, drivers & protection circuits for HV-IGBT, reliability, multi-level topologies

Some teaching activity will be required.
You may obtain further information from Professor Remus Teodorescu, Department of Energy Technology, phone: +45 9940 9249 concerning the technical aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

For further information about stipends and salary contact Ms. Helen Kjerstein Kristensen, The Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, phone: +45 9940 7373.

Agreement
Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of January 11, 2006 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the Ministry of Finance Circular of June 13, 2007 on the employment structure at Danish Universities.

The generic content of the PhD programmes is as follows:
PE4- Modelling life time of electrical components and systems in wind turbines
The future large wind turbines especially off-shore should have a very high availability time due to high maintainace and reparation cost and high value of the lost production. It has becoming increasingly important to accurately predict the reliability of the electrical components in the design phase to ensure that the quality of the end product lives up to the customer expectations. As a consequence, life time modelling is required to provide reliability data for new designs before applying them in turbines.

The objectives of this programme will include:
Identification of the mission profiles of the wind turbine and the components that gets most impacted
Translation of mission profiles to components stress levels (temperature, vibrations, voltage, current)
Modelling of components life-time model based on: physics of failure, type of stress, stress combination and acceleration factors
System level aggregation of components life time models to wind turbine lifetime model
Key topics: reliability, failure physics and mechanisms, condition monitoring, electrical components physics, life-time prediction

Some teaching activity will be required.
