Netherlands : PhD Scholarship: Precision Contactless Transport System

The 3ME Faculty trains committed engineering students and PhD candidates in groundbreaking scientific research in the fields of mechanical, maritime and materials engineering. 3ME is the epitome of a dynamic, innovative faculty, with a European scope that contributes demonstrable economic and social benefits.

Job description

Silicon wafers, solar cells and the glass sheets used in large-screen displays are high-cost, flexible and fragile products; mechanical contact during handling and transport adds to the risk of contamination, damage or breakage. To reduce the impact and number of contacts, new handling and transport concepts are being developed.
In our labs, a highly innovative contactless concept has been developed in which the product is carried on a distributed thin air film. We can then propel and position the product with sub-micron accuracy and high control bandwidth. This research has led to the development of 3 lab-scale demonstrators (see
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCtXQ_58cz4).
Scaling this lab-scale concept to production size requires a modular design. Sub-mm size control valves, air flow conduits and surface features need to be developed using 3D printing and multi-layer design.
The PhD student will design different modules (e.g., for passive linear transport, actively controlled transport, position control) and develop the required components. Various manufacturing techniques need to be studied, compared and evaluated for their applicability in realising the small-scale machine components and for their scalability. The challenge is to reduce the size of each individual actuator while increasing the system’s overall size.

Requirements

This position requires an MSc degree in Mechanical or System and Control Engineering or a closely related field with outstanding results, along with a strong background in manufacturing methods and micro-fluidic systems. A combination of an academic mindset and practical engineering skills is also necessary, as are excellent writing and presentation skills in English.

Conditions of employment

TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA'). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
