EEMCS: Your Connection to the Future.

Job description

For the Scale.It.Up project we are seeking enthusiastic Master students interested in earning a PhD degree in the intersection of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA), multi-tenant software systems, software testing and software evolution.

Multi-tenant software systems are a new breed of hosted software applications, whereby a service-provider installs an application that is concurrently used by several customers. Specific to multi-tenancy are the requirements of (1) configurability, to address the needs and wishes of many tenants, and (2) zero downtime. The Scale.It.Up research project aims to investigate ways to allow online software evolution and online testing, to enable a high degree of configurability while ensuring zero downtime.

This project aims to determine:
• An efficient architecture for such a multi-tenant environment
• How to efficiently maintain different versions of a single service
• How to efficiently perform online testing
• How to establish the ideal time/place to perform online evolution or testing
• Whether we can improve load-balancing for multi-tenant software systems.

You will work in close cooperation with our industrial partners Exact Software and Adyen. Research will follow an industry-as-laboratory style, i.e., actual research problems are drawn from industry, and researched solutions are tried out immediately in the industrial context.

Requirements

Requirements for candidates include:
• Master’s degree in computer science or informatics.
• Broad experience and interest in the area of software engineering.
• Good communication, strong social skills, team player attitude.
• Independent working style.
• A good knowledge of English is an absolute must.
• Eagerness to learn.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be employed full-time by TU Delft for a fixed period of 4 years within which he or she is expected to write a dissertation leading to a doctoral degree (PhD thesis). The starting salary for a PhD is €2042 gross per month increasing to a maximum of €2612 gross per month in the fourth year.
