21 PhD scholarships (starting 1st of October) in Soft Matter Science are available in the IRTG Soft Matter Science: Concepts for the Design of Functional Materials. This International Research Training Group brings together chemists, physicists and engineers from Freiburg, Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Basel to establish a new PhD program in soft matter science, aiming to develop concepts for the design of innovative materials with a high level of functionality.

The PhD training comprises:
* Comprehensive, interdisciplinary research in soft matter science
* Intense mentoring by at least two advisors
* Exchange of PhD students between the participating laboratories in Germany, France and Switzerland
* Introductory and advanced courses in the research field of the IRTG
* Specialised workshops and training camps
* Special mentoring and support for women
* Wide spectrum of further qualification measures

Projects:

A: Controlling and directing assembly processes in soft matter systems
* Transient self-assembled networks (A1)
* Dynamic nanostructures in self-assembled lipid bilayers (A2)
* Self-assembled nanoribbons and nanotubes of aromatic diamide-esters (A3)
* Self-assembled donor-acceptor amphiphilic polymers (A4)
* Controlled nucleation and growth of conjugated polymers (A5)

B: Designing and improving multicomponent soft matter systems
* Macromolecular nanohybrid molecules (B1)
* Polymer multilayers at solid substrates (B2)
* Influence of nanofillers on the properties of polymer latex films (B3)
* Colloidal stabilization by unattached homo- and copolymers (B4)

C: Exploring and sensing interfacial properties of soft matter systems
* Interactions between biological systems and patterned surfaces (C1)
* Development of mechanically responsive sensors (C2)
* Modeling late stages of spin coating (C3)
* Frictional and adhesive properties of polymer surfaces and films of controlled structure and function (C4)
* Mechanics of surface recovery and reconstruction after deformation (C5)
