The Department of Product and Production Development, Division of Production Systems is announcing a PhD position within the Virtual Production group. The group focuses on applied research, both national and international, normally in close collaboration with industry.

Job description

The offered PhD position is part of a research project aimed at developing a tool for analysis of Ecologic and Economic Impact throughout the complete lifecycle of industrial products. In the project, simulation of material flow in production (Discrete Event Simulation) is combined with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). We want to enable companies to increase their competitiveness by improving both sustainability and productivity. The project is funded by the Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) ProViking (www.proviking.se). You will work in close collaboration with other researchers in the group and with industrial partners. Three main research challenges will be addressed:

  1. Efficient management of environmental data. How can required data for production performance and environmental impact be collected and processed efficiently?
  2. Selecting system delimitations. How are the system delimitations chosen to ensure objective measurements and enable comparison?
  3. Modeling methodology through an entire product lifecycle. How are models built and communicated between companies involved in the product lifecycle?

Your main focus within the group will be to develop and validate a demonstrator tool showing how to measure and evaluate the environmental impact for a product during its lifecycle.

Required qualifications
  • The applicant should hold a M.Sc. degree (civilingenjörsexamen) related to production systems and/or sustainability analysis.

  • Additional desired skills stand in favor for the applicant: Programming, lifecycle assessment, discrete event simulation, data management, visualization

Details about employment: The PhD student positions are limited to five years and will include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties. You can apply prior the completion of your degree but you are expected to have a degree when the position starts.
