Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:

PhD student position in physical chemistry with focus on high efficiency molecular nano solar cells

At the Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry in the division of Physical Chemistry, starting autumn 2010.

One of the most important challenges for mankind is the change from the use of fossil energy sources to renewable energy sources, which would decrease the problems of e.g. global warming. Photovoltaics has a tremendeous development potential and may be one of the largest energy sources in the future. To be able to compete with fossil energy sources, the cost of the solar cells must decrease and the research for new types of solar cells is therefore important. Solar cells based on nanoparticles and molecules, i.e. molecular nano solar cells is possible to produce to a low cost and is today a fast expanding research area. The research project described below will be focused at research on high efficiency solar cells, within this interesting and timely research area. The PhD position is included in the collaboration project” Molecular solar cells: Fundamental studies and applied research”, which recently got funding.

In this PhD project new types of solar cells will be investigated, and the purpose is specifically to find new concepts for high efficiency of the conversion from light to electricity. The project includes construction and assembly of the new solar cells and measurements of the power conversion efficiency. Also more advanced measurements with e.g. laser based spectroscopies will also be important for the understanding of the function of the solar cell. The research will be performed in collaboration with several researchers and research groups. Specifically, the collaboration with material chemists will be important for the design of new materials to the solar cell, and the collaboration with physicists will be important for advanced measurements methods. The project is positioned at the division of physical chemistry at the department of physical and analytical chemistry at the Ångström laboratory.
The applicant is expected to have a Masters degree in Chemistry, Physics, or equivalent, with a background in semiconductor science. The application should include a statement of research interest, CV, certificates of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of Master thesis, published article or relevant materials, if available. Also, letter(s) of recommendation should be included.
The PhD position is for four years.

Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance and women are especially encouraged to apply.
