Uppsala University hereby declares the following positions to be open for application:

2 PhD positions in thin film solar cells

The PhD studies will be performed in the subject Engineering Physics with specialization in Electronics, at the Department of Engineering Sciences, the Ångström Laboratory. Starting date as soon as possible.

The solar cell group at the Ångström Laboratory is developing efficient solar cells at low cost using thin film technology. The solar cells are based on Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) and recently the research was expanded to include alternative materials like Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS). The research deals both with fabrication as well as analysis of thin film solar cells and solar cell modules. Fabrication of solar cells is made in a fully equipped laboratory in the Ångström Cleanroom. The group has obtained solar cells with 18.5 % efficiency, which is among the highest reported efficiencies for CIGS-based solar cells in the world. Presently 10 people is working with the research, among which 5 are PhD students. Group leader is Associate Professor Marika Edoff. More information about the group and its research can be found at www.asc.angstrom.uu.se.

1.  The first PhD project; "Alternative materials for thin film solar cells” aims at experimental synthesis and characterization of thin film Cu2ZnSnS4 and other promising solar cell materials not containing rare or hazardous elements. Film characterization includes optical, electrical, chemical and structural studies. Complete solar cell devices will be fabricated where the new material replaces the CIGS layer.

2.  The second PhD project; “Thin transparent conducting oxides” aims at development and characterization of new materials for the so called window layer in thin film solar cells. The new materials will be evaluated both for CIGS-based solar cell devices and for devices based on new absorber materials like CZTS. The transparent conducting oxides are to be manufactured mainly by chemical vapor phase techniques such as chemical vapor deposition and atomic layer deposition. The main focus of the project is on experimental synthesis and characterization as well as on fabrication of highly efficient solar cell devices.

The applicants should have knowledge corresponding to a Master of Science in Engineering Physics, Material Science or Electronics. Good computer skills are meriting as well as good knowledge of solid state physics and mathematics. We demand good oral and written English. Both positions will require work in the clean room lab with processing of solar cells. We welcome female applicants, since the majority in the group is male.

The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including department duties (typically teaching) at a level not exceeding 20%. Information about the PhD education can be found on the department home page, www.teknik.uu.se and the homepage of the Faculty of Science and Technology, www.teknat.uu.se. The solar cell group is part of the Department for Engineering Sciences, Solid State Electronics division.

For more information, please contact group leader Marika Edoff, e-mail: Marika.Edoff@angstrom.uu.se, phone. 018-471 7249, mobile 070 425 0895.

The application should be sent preferrably by e-mail to: registrator@uu.se, or by fax +46 18-471 2000, or by mail to Registar’s Office, Uppsala University, Box 256, 751 05 UPPSALA. In any correspondence, please use the reference number UFV-PA 2010/1568. Application deadline on 30 July, 2010.
