Project Description
The research will be carried out in Paris (Epilepsy Unit in collaboration with the Centre for NeuroImaging Research – CENIR at La Salpêtrière Hospital).

Objective of the PhD research
Investigation of the benefits of music on memory and learning abilities and the possible transfer to nonmusical domains in clinical populationsMethods planned for the PhD research:
Behavioural and fMRI methods with patients with memory disorders (e.g., temporal lobe epileptics) as compared to healthy participants and/or intracranial EEG recordings in pharmacologically uncontrolled epileptic patients (Epilepsy Unit and Centre for NeuroImaging Research – CENIR at La Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris).
Expected added value provided by the ITN
Collaborations with network parners with the relevant expertise in memory (Bigand, Tillmann), neuropsychology (Kotz) and rehabilitation (Altenmüller, Overy).

Description

A PhD scholarship (3 years) is available as part of the European research project EBRAMUS (Europe BRAin and MUSic; ITN Marie Curie FP7). Enrolment as a PhD student will begin in October or November 2010.


EBRAMUS is a consortium of European research centres based in Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and Poland (for further information: http://leadserv.u-bourgogne.fr/ebramus). EBRAMUS offers a unique interdisciplinary graduate programme to study the behavioural, functional, structural, and plastic effects of music on cognitive functions such us language, memory, learning, and motor behaviour through an integrative and interdisciplinary approach. Its goal is to train PhD students in the multidisciplinary aspects of music in rehabilitation, learning, and facilitation of cognitive processes with behavioural and neuroscience (EEG, fMRI, etc.) methods.
