Sweden : PhD Student Position in Electronic Systems Design

Sponsored Links

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 13,300 full-year undergraduate students, 1,500 postgraduate students and 3,900 employees.

The school of Information and Communication Technology, ICT, conducts research and education in the Information Technology, Electronics, and Physics. We work with the scientific foundation, as well as the technical infrastructure and services. We have an internationally competitive profile in research in nano-electronics, photonics, electronic and computer systems, software and communication technology. The collaboration with the surrounding companies is facilitated e.g. by Kista Science City. We also offer a broad spectrum of university level education programs.

Description of the position

Within an EU project we seek a Ph.D. student for doing research on the topic platforms for Sea-of-Cores in Network-on-Chip (NoC).
The Department of Electronic Systems has during the last ten years successfully done research on test, modeling, and design of Network-on-Chips (NoCs) and is, if not world leading, one of the foremost within the area in the world. The last year’s trend from single core to multi core processing will revolutionize how we view a computer. It is expected that the CPU core will be the elementary building block, i.e., the gate, of the 21st century. In such a Sea-of-Cores scenario, several questions immediately appear:
1) How do we specify such systems?
2) How do we manage HW?
3) How do we manage SW?
4) How do we generate such systems?
5) How do we configure such systems?
6) How do we simulate such systems?
7) How do we debug such systems?
The goal of this project is to study limitations within current design tools, suggest and make improvements of them, and in the end to work out a design methodology for Sea-of-Cores systems.

Eligibility and Assessment Criteria

The potential candidate has a master degree in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or a corresponding degree.

A strong interest and background in Digital Design of Embedded Systems and VHDL programming is required. A strong background in modeling, programming languages or software engineering is also highly desirable. The candidate should be distinctly motivated for doing scientific research and should have a well developed analytic ability to formulate and solve problems independently. Furthermore, excellent team work and communication skills are required.

To address its varied challenges, KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially with regard to its gender structure.
