Australia : Doctoral Program in Political and Social Thought

Sponsored Links

At the Centre for Citizenship and Public Policy we bring the resources of political and social thought to bear on important challenges of our time – rethinking public value; investigating the relation between ethics and politics; and exploring intelligent, cooperative, and creative responses to change.

Our unique four year PhD in Political and Social Thought engages students in one year of advanced graduate coursework, fostering the intellectual quality and development of their supervised research thesis.

All Doctoral candidates participate in courses, seminars and supervisory relationships with outstanding academic staff working in the following research areas:

  • Rethinking ‘the economy’ (reclaiming it as a site of politics; the integration of economic action with its human and more-than-human environments)
  • Citizenship, cosmopolitanism & human rights
  • The state and civility
  • Subjectivity, ethics, and politics
  • Freedom, practical reason, and identity
  • Narratives of modernity and the human heritage
  • Social criticism, social learning and social change
  • Governments, jurisdictions and place
  • Democratic theory and practice.

For more detailed information on these themes, select CCPP research program.

Admission

Potential Doctoral candidates will be either International or Domestic (Australian citizens and permanent residents and New Zealand citizens). Each applicant must follow a two step process.

1. Expression of interest to the Centre for Citizenship and Public Policy

Intending candidates will write an ‘expression of interest’ which demonstrates their interest and potential fit with the Doctorate in Political and Social Thought.

The expression of interest must include three items:

  • a brief statement of why you would like to engage in this program;
  • a one-page description of your research interests and potential thesis topic that demonstrates how it could be conceived as a study within political and social thought. You should also indicate who among the Centre’s Professorial Fellows you would like to work with as a thesis supervisor (not a binding commitment); and
  • a piece of writing (article length: 7,000-8,000 words) that gives us an idea of your abilities.

Professor Tim Rowse will meet you (by phone, skype or in person) to discuss the question of your fit with the Program. The Centre will advise all those who have expressed interest whether the Centre wishes to admit them.

2. Enrolment and Scholarship

Applicants who are accepted by the Centre must then apply to the University of Western Sydney for admission and (if you wish) for a scholarship.

Australian citizens, permanent residents and NZ citizens apply online using the UWS Scholarship and Admission application form.

International students apply via the UWS International Office.

Deadline for applications

All enquiries should be directed to Doctoral Program Coordinator Professor Tim Rowse via email on ccpp@uws.edu.au or contact us.

The courses offered in 2011 are as follows:

For more detailed information on course descriptions, please select CCPP Doctoral Program Course Outlines. UWS Higher Degree Research candidates in other programs can seek to enrol in one or more of these courses with the instructor’s permission.

Confirmation of candidature

All Doctoral candidates at UWS must successfully complete a formal Confirmation of Candidature. In the Centre’s doctoral program the Confirmation of Candidature process will be conducted in April, May or June in the candidate’s second year of enrolment. To prepare for this, early in the second year of the program candidates will participate in a thesis proposal workshop, comprising four sessions covering the following topics: a) the principles of Research Design; b) the art of reading and writing in research and scholarship; c) the early stages of presenting/discussing a thesis topic; d) the presentation of a thesis proposal with an attached bibliography.

Expectations of candidate participation in Centre activities

The Centre has three strands of regular academic activity in which all members and students are expected to participate: a public seminar series; a Journal Club (in-house only) and Work-in-Progress seminars (in-house only).
