Belgium : Two PhD Positions in Department of Mechanical construction and production

Currently two research positions are available, on the following topics:

1. Strain-based design requirements for spiral welded pipes
Within this project, the suitability of high strength spiral pipes for projects requiring a strain based design approach will be studied in detail. In the literature there is a lack of information on systematic studies on this aspect, especially on the high strength and high toughness spirally welded linepipes.
The global aim of the proposed project is to provide improved guidance on strain-based design of spiral welded pipelines. The project will focus on high strength linepipe steels for offshore and Arctic applications fabricated by a spiral submerged arc welding process. Emphasis of the project is on the tensile strain capacity of the seam welded areas.

2. Design of Premium Connection for Casing and Tubing
The main goal of this project is to make a contribution to the extension of fundamental knowledge with respect to the joint integrity and sealability of large-scale mechanical threaded connections for tubular structures in order to develop rules for the design, production and use of new premium connections. From a social and economical viewpoint, a correct assessment of the integrity and lifetime of the construction will lead to timely maintenance and thus important savings on reparation costs. The assessment of the structure's integrity will ultimately result in a set of design guidelines for premium connections, taking into account the specific demands defined by operational and environmental conditions.

Profile

You have a Master degree in Engineering (electromechanical, civil, materials science or engineering physics).

You have a demonstrable interest in, and qualifications for, conducting experimental and numerical scientific research

Besides good research skills, you also have excellent social skills.

You are proficient in written/spoken English and or Dutch
