Germany : PhD position at Department of Evolutionary Ecology and Genetics

Sponsored Links

The PhD project aims at a characterization of the microbiota of the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. More or less all organisms, including humans, associate with an often extremely diverse microbiota. It is only since relatively recently that we know that the microbiota is of immense importance for host biology and fitness. Yet, to date, we have only little understanding of how the various microbes interact with their host and how such interactions are mediated at the molecular level. We intend to establish C. elegans as a tractable genetic model system for the in-depth analysis of microbiota-host interactions. Thus, the PhD project involves isolation of nematodes from the wild, characterization of associated microbes using metagenomic approaches, and also detailed analysis of the type of interaction (pathogen, mutualist), based on microscopic approaches (electron, Normarski, FISH), phenotypic assays (nematode fitness and behavior), and genetic analyses (RNAi, RT-PCR, !
transcriptomics, etc).

The PhD position will be based in the recently founded Department of Evolutionary Ecology and Genetics at the University of Kiel (Northern Germany), headed by Prof. Dr. Hinrich Schulenburg. The department itself provides an international and interactive atmosphere, while Kiel University and connected institutes (e.g., Max Planck Institute in Ploen) offer a stimulating research environment with a particular focus on evolutionary biology, microbiota research, and C. elegans genetics.

Requirements for the position

Master or Diploma in Biology, high motivation, excellent background in microbiology and/or evolutionary biology and/or molecular biology, handling of complex experimental set-up, teamwork, fluency in English.
