Germany : 3-year IAS-funded PhD Studentship

The Chair of Ecoclimatology at Technische Universität München is seeking applications from highly motivated candidates for a 3-year IAS-funded PhD Studentship. The major focus of the project is to find, generate and analyse unexploited datasets suitable for the detection of climate change impacts. Novel datasets that provide information on other aspects of environmental change will also be valuable. Due to the alliance of the chair with the IAS the candidate has the chance to work in a highly interdisciplinary, multi-national team with numerous connections and contacts throughout Europe.

Work comprises
·    Work in archives, museums and research groups to identify novel datasets for assessing the impacts of climate change
·    Processing the data
·    Statistical analysis of the data to identify change and the causes of change

The applicant should intend to obtain the Ph.D. degree within the scheduled time of 3 years. We expect and encourage publication of the results in peer reviewed journals.

Qualifications
·    A degree in science (e.g. forestry, biology, environmental science, ecology, physical geography) and a strong interest in working in science and environmental change.
·    Good communication and research skills, inquisitiveness, determination and stamina
·    Good statistical skills are also required as well as high motivation and interest in performing data analysis
·    Very good writing and communication skills in English and German

He/She will become part of an interdisciplinary, lively working group and a student member of TUM, one of Germany’s first universities of excellence. Supervision will be provided by Profs Tim H. Sparks (TUM IAS) and Annette Menzel (TUM WZW). The candidate has the possibility to join the TUM Graduate school. The payment and conditions of employment follow the specifications of TUM-IAS scholarships.

The Chair of Ecoclimatology at the faculty of Center of Life and Food Science Weihenstephan is situated in Freising 35km north-east of Munich, it can be easily reached by all means of transport.
