The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø DTU has been granted a 4-year project, OPTIMAC, to investigate the optimized processing of multi-material architectures for functional ceramics. Many devices, including fuel cells, electrolyzers, gas separation membranes and magnetic refrigeration units, contain functional ceramics. Their performance may be improved by grading the ceramic materials, i.e. making multi-material components. The processing of such components is challenging, and it is the objective of the project to increase our understanding of the processes involved, including shaping, sintering and mechanical behavior.

The project takes place in collaboration between Risø DTU and leading Danish and international research institutions and companies. We now have openings for 5 positions in the project. We must have your application by August 15, 2010.

Project description
In this project the focus is on predicting the shape changes and stress field of a co-sintering multiphase ceramic structure on the macroscopic level. During the sintering process it is known that internal stresses can arise from external constraint or from differential densification. These stresses can give rise to significant sintering rate changes, distortions and damage in the sintered body. The purpose of this project is to predict the macroscopic dimensional changes and stress field of a co-sintering multiphase ceramic structure on the macroscopic level.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, materials science or similar
• Experience with modelling
• Knowledge of fracture mechanics, materials science
• Knowledge in ceramic processing
• Preferably experience with experimental methods for materials characterization
• Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group
• Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years. The place of work is Risø DTU in Roskilde.
