The NRW Research School BioStruct – Biological Structures in Molecular Medicine and Biotechnology at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf in Germany, funded by the Ministry of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of the German Federal State North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), and the school chairmen Prof. Dr. Lutz Schmitt and Prof. Dr. Dieter Willbold invite applications one PhD Scholarships starting in October 2010.

BioStruct offers innovative PhD education and research programs within a stimulating interdisciplinary environment combining the field of structural biology with molecular medicine and biotechnology.
Highly motivated and excellent candidates holding an MSc or Diploma degree in the fields of Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and related fields can directly apply for a

PhD Scholarship for ‘Protein Structure Determination using NMR Spectroscopy’

including a monthly stipend of 1345,- EUR and contributions towards travel and research expenses.

The ideal candidate will have a background in protein biochemistry and biophysical characterization of proteins. Basic knowledge and/or experience in NMR spectroscopy would be an advantage. A strong interest in structural biology is a prerequisite.
Workplace will be the “Forschungszentrum Jülich”.

PhD Research Project Summary:
Sperm can respond to a single molecule of chemoattractant released by an egg. The mechanism underlying this extreme sensitivity is unknown. Crucial signaling events in the response of sperm to chemoattractant include the rapid synthesis of the intracellular messenger guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cGMP) and the ensuing membrane hyperpolarization that results from the opening of potassium-selective cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNGK) channels. In this project using liquid NMR spectroscopy the 3D structures of newly characterised cyclic nucleotide-binding domains of sperm cells in apo and holo states shall be solved.
