The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics. You can read more about the Department here: http://www.ifi.uio.no. The Department has near 800 students on bachelor level, 300 master students, and over 200 PhD students. The totall staff of the Department is close to 250 employees, about 150 of these are full time scientific positions: about 60 Professors and Associate Professors.

The post-doctoral fellowship is for a duration of three years. No one can be appointed for more than one period at the same institution.

Job Description

The Biomedical Research Group (BRG) focuses on computational and statistical applications in the biological and medical sciences and its activities are mainly in the areas of bioinformatics and statistical genomics. It is associated with two Norwegian Centres of Excellence: Centre for Cancer Biomedicine (CCB) and Centre for Molecular Biology and Neuroscience (CMBN). Currently, BRG consists of three permanent academic staff members, five adjoint professors, one postdoc and one engineer. A number of PhD students, including several in the above centres, are supervised by BRG members. The group participates in extensive international and national colloborations, and is working in close collaboration with Oslo University Hospital. Further information about the group can be found at http://www.ifi.uio.no/forskning/grupper/bio

Within the field of bioinformatics, we work on development and advanced use of computer based tools for analysis of biological sequences. Relevant projects for the hiring position include general sequence analysis, search and comparison of sequences and motifs in databases, and studies of DNA variation. We are utilizing and developing methods that take advantage of high-performance computing facilities, and are also interested in methods tied to the analysis of large-scale sequencing data.

Within the field of computational statistical genomics, relevant projects for the hiring position include statistical and computational studies of germline and somatic genomic and epigenomic variation (including but not restricted to SNPs, point mutations, CNVs, CNAs and methylation changes), computational inference with omics data (in particular on the level of integrating information from more than one source, such as aCGH, mRNA and miRNA), computational tools for pathway analysis, as well as association studies seeking to link such observations to phenotypes and clinical features (e.g. tumor aggressiveness, metastasis, response to treatment).

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a PhD-degree (or equivalent) in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics or a related field. The successful candidate has previous experience from at least one of the fields of bioinformatics, computational statistical genomics or biostatistics, and preferably has also had some contact with biomedical applications in the past. Applicants must state their areas of interest. Applicants with interests closely related to research areas in which the group is already active will be preferred.

We seek a highly motivated, enthusiastic person with the ambition to gain insight and publish papers in leading, international journals. The successful candidate must be prepared to spend some periods abroad for training and cooperation.

A good command of English is required.
