Norway : Doctoral research fellowship with the research area Media Innovations

Sponsored Links

The position is affiliated with the research area Media Innovations at the Department of Media and Communication. Media Innovations explores how changing technologies, and changing modes of usage and engagement with media bring about media innovation and transformation of the media sector. Users of digital media are becoming increasingly more active as producers (and re-distributors) of content, contributing to new services, new genres, new social constellations and new business models. By emphasizing how interrelations between media technology and users contribute to drive innovation, Media Innovations will provide a framework for studying change that enables a deeper understanding of the ongoing developments, and the possibilities and challenges this involves for individuals and society.

The candidate is expected to affiliate with the research area Media Innovations and to contribute to the further development of this.

Candidates who are accepted must participate in the Faculty of Humanities’ researcher education programme (cf. regulations and supplementary provisions for the faculty’s researcher education) and must also engage in the designated research activities on a 100 percent basis. The designated aim of the project is to complete a doctoral dissertation to be defended at a public disputation for the Ph.D.-degree.

The position is available for a period of three years. For further information, see http://www.media.uio.no/english/

Qualifications

A Master degree or equivalent in an area relevant to the topic of the doctoral dissertation.

The PhD project proposal must be related to at least one of the following areas of change:

  • New media services: New media services are now developed for several platforms, and integrate different modes of communication (convergence).
  • New players: The concept of “the media sector” is increasingly blurred as players not formerly associated with the sector begin to incorporate media practices into their mode of operations.
  • New roles of users: New modes of communication emerge as a growing proportion of the population use personal digital media to interact with the mass media and each other.
  • New practices by existing media organizations: New products and services and changing patterns of usage require market incumbents to regroup and reconsider their strategies and business models.

Qualifications and Personal Skills

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the quality of the project description and on the assumed academic and personal ability on the part of the candidates to complete the dissertation within the given time frame. The ability to co-operate and participate in scientific collaboration across disciplines is also of high significance. The short-listed candidates may be called for an interview at the University of Oslo.

We offer

  • salary level 48 -55 (NOK 374 200-401 500, depending on level of expertise)
  • a challenging and stimulating working environment
  • attractive welfare arrangements
