Italy : Official Call for the admission to the PhD in Molecular Medicine

In compliance with the regulations currently in force, the Universita degli Studi of Milan, the Universita degli Studi of Naples Federico II, and the Fondazione Scuola Superiore Europea di Medicina Molecolare (SEMM) will set up a research doctorate of a highly innovative nature, called PhD (Philosophiae Doctor) in Molecular Medicine (Molecular Oncology, Computational Biology and Human Genetics) to be carried out at the universities of Milan and Naples. The aim of the PhD in Molecular Medicine is to train researchers who are focused on the problems related to Molecular and Post-genomic Medicine, especially as far as Molecular Oncology and Genetic Diseases are concerned.
 
This course is aimed mainly to young, recent university graduates with a brilliant university career. The fundamental elements of the training program are:
 • the insertion of graduate students in the experimental research process;
• the introduction of new subject matters linked to the developments in Post-genomics and Molecular Medicine;
• the teaching of the fundamentals of financial management and communication in the field of research;
• the internationality.
 
The distinctive feature of the course is its international dimension due to:
 
• the presence of foreign professors and graduate students;
• liaison with prestigious foreign institutions involved in particular in the fields of Post-genomics and Molecular Medicine;
• the use of the English language as the official language of the course.
 
Scientific-disciplinary sectors covered by the course: BIO/6, BIO/10, BIO/11, BIO/12, BIO/13, BIO/14,
BIO/15, BIO/18, CHIM/06, FIS/07, INF/01, MED/01, MED/03, MED/04, MED/08, MED/46, MED/49.
 
Length of the course: 4 years
 
Curricula:
- Molecular Oncology (Milan and Naples)
- Computational Biology (Milan)
- Human Genetics (Naples)
 
Available positions: 34, 30 of which in Milan and 4 in Naples
 
Fellowships: 17 (15 assigned to Milan, 2 to Naples).
 
The available positions and the fellwoships are distributed among the three curricula:
 
- Molecular Oncology: 27 positions (25 Milan, 2 Naples), 15 of which with fellowship (14 Milan, 1 Naples):
• 3 fellowships funded by the Università degli Studi of Milan 
• 6 fellowships funded by the European Institute of Oncology (IEO)
• 5 fellowships funded by the FIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology (IFOM)
• 1 fellowship funded by CEINGE (Naples site)
 
- Computational Biology: 5 positions, 1 of which awarded with a fellowship of the University degli Studi of Milan
 
- Human Genetics:  2 positions (Naples site), 1 of which awarded with a fellowship funded by CEINGE
 
Among the 15 fellowships assigned to Milan, max. 2 are reserved to non-EU candidates, not included in the provisions of the Italian decree n. 286, dated 25 July 1998, amended by the law n. 189, dated 30 July 2002, provided that, in the final ranking list for the Milan site, they rank in a position awarded with a fellowship. If no non-EU candidates rank in an awarding position, the above-mentioned fellowships will be assigned to European candidates ranking in an awarding position.


Another fellowship is reserved exclusively to a non-EU candidate residing abroad, provided that, in the final ranking list for the Milan site, he/she ranks in a position awarded with a fellowship.
 
The fellowships may be increased if external funding becomes available before the start of the entry examinations.

The PhD training activities will be carried out in the premises of the following Centres:
 Milan
- FIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology (IFOM) and European Institute of Oncology (IEO)
 
Naples
- CEINGE – Advanced Biotechnologies and TELETHON Institute.
 
In order to be admitted to the PhD program, candidates have to sit an examination in which they will be evaluated according to their university titles and qualifications; this examination complies with the
provisions outlined in the following articles.

Applications must be submitted within 26 September 2010. 
Italian and foreign citizens must submit their applications electronically, by accessing the web site http://www.semm.it. The application form consists in the filling of an electronic CV, to be submitted through the web site. 
The CV must include the following information:
- key personal data;
- the key elements of the candidate’s educational track;
- the exams passed;
- the final mark of the degree;
- a brief summary of the degree thesis;
- possible publications and work experiences;
- the centre (in Milan or Naples), in which the candidate would prefer to attend the course;
- the curriculum of interest, among those available at the chosen centre (the full list of the curricula of each centre, including the relevant available positions and the group leaders offering them, is
available on the website http://www.semm.it);
- a description of the reasons why the applicant wishes to attend the course;
- a self-assessment of the candidate’s proficiency in English;
- names of the two referees who will support the candidate.
 
Every application form will be automatically assigned a ID number, which will be communicated to the applicant via e-mail as confirmation of the application being received. This number will be used as identification of the candidate for any further communication (admission to examination, final ranking, etc.) through the web site.

The candidates have also to enclose two letters of reference supporting the application. The templates of these letters are to be downloaded from the web site by the candidate, who will send them to the two chosen referees.  These referees will take care to send  these letters by e-mail to the address phd@semm.it within the deadline. The referees should hold an academic or project leader position.
