Germany : Post-Doctorate in Geophysical Turbulence

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for 1 Post-Doctorate (m/f) in Geophysical Turbulence (2010-15) and 1 Scientific Programmer (m/f) in High Performance Computing (2010-16)

The newly founded research group Turbulence Mixing Processes in the Earth System will study turbulence and turbulent mixing in geophysical flows using direct numerical simulations to be performed in high performance computing centres. Research will con-centrate on small scale phenomena as a complement to the large-scale approaches (GCM and LES). The objective is to identify those regions of the planet where the local turbulent mixing processes are believed to play a fundamental role, derive simplified ar-chetypal problems that contain some of the essential physics of the original system, per-form direct numerical simulations of them and analyze the data.
We are seeking one Post-doc to further develop his/her career along these lines. Specific problems we are currently involved with include the cloud-top mixing layer, penetrative convection and the stable boundary layer, though research need not be restricted to these. A background in turbulence (fundamental research and/or modelling), geophysical flows and numerical simulations is required. Previous work in GCM or LES of atmospheric or ocean systems is of advantage. The scientific programmer is expected to support the codes for an optimal use of the computing time allocated in the high performance comput-ing centres; experience with HPC and parallel computing is therefore important. The working language is English.

The positions are initially offered for three years, with the possibility of an extension to five years, starting as soon as possible. Payment will be in accordance with a civil service po-sition (TVöD E13), including extensive social security plans. Conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Ad-vancement of Sciences, and those of the German civil service.
