Sweden : Post-Doc in Numerical Simulations For Vehicle Aerodynamics

Sponsored Links

Department of Applied Mechanics and its six divisions conduct research in the areas of vehicle design and mechanical engineering. The research is often carried out together with national and international academic and industrial partners, and it concerns both fundamental and applied problems. This position is placed within the Division of Fluid Dynamics .

Job description

The potential candidate will work with numerical simulations of flows around trains and road vehicles. The first part of the project will be on studies of flows around vehicles in crosswinds and in particular in gusty winds. The second part of the project will deal with development of numerical tools for active flow control that can be used for improvement of aerodynamic performance of road vehicles and trains.

We will use time-dependent numerical simulations such as LES and hybrid approaches such as DES or PANS to study flows around trains and road vehicles. These techniques have been used for a long time within our research group with great success and this project is continuation of existing projects within our group. One example where more research is needed is within time-dependent simulations of flows around vehicles with changing yaw angles, such as when vehicle is entering a curve under the influence of crosswind.

The development of the active flow control using numerical simulations such as LES has been studied for some time within our research group. If active flow control will become a practical way of improving aerodynamic performance of vehicle it has to adjust to flow conditions by closing the control loop in a so called active flow control. Most of the work in our research group has been on LES of open loop active flow control and this project aims to extend it to closed loop active flow control.

This post-doc position is for the duration of one year with possible extension of another year.
