Germany : Ph.D. Student Position in Physics

Sponsored Links

The School of Engineering and Science at Jacobs University Bremen invites applications for a Ph.D. Student Position in Physics in the working group of Prof. Arnulf Materny. Earliest starting date is 1 October 2010.

The DFG (German Research Foundation) has granted an ambitious project with an overall volume of more than half million Euro. The new research project aims at the combination of femtosecond time-resolved nonlinear Raman spectroscopy with scanning probe microscopy. Both the nonlinear four-wave mixing spectroscopy, where three laser pulses generate time-dependent Raman signals, and the nanoscopy (AFM, NSOM, etc.) are complex techniques. Therefore, this project makes high demands on the experimenter. The set-up has already been completed and the new student would work together with a senior student already experienced in performing the experiments.

For the various stations towards the realization of the combination of the extremely high temporal and spatial resolution the two students will work together under supervision of the head of the working group, Prof. Materny. The Ph.D. student would after a training period perform first experiments followed by measurements on the molecular systems relevant to the project.

The goal of the project is the realization of a highly spatially resolved characterization of vibrational dynamics and their coupling to the electronic system of the molecules. Specific problems are the analysis of the interaction of polymer chains and defect structures in molecular crystals as well as the investigation of light-induced energy transfer in pigment molecules encaged in nano structures (artificial photosystems). For the targeted characterization of these environmental influences, the combination with nanocopy is essential.

The work is in the field of (chemical) physics. Due to the demanding technical problems, which have to be solved, the ideal candidate is physicist or physical chemist with strong interest in experimental sciences. The Ph.D. candidate should ideally have already worked on problems related to the two main fields, femtosecond spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy, but experience in related fields might also be sufficient.
The work group is part of a research team at Jacobs University, where physicists, chemists, and electrical engineers jointly investigate nano materials and quantum structures. The work environment is international. Therefore, a good command of the English language is mandatory. Basic German knowledge would be advantageous.

Persons leaving Jacobs University in all ranks in most cases have taken very good positions in industry as well as other universities. Part of this success next to the quality of education and research definitely is the international orientation.

Applications should include a single PDF attachment containing a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statements of research interests, transcripts (copies) of certificates/degrees, list of publication, availability (soonest and latest possible starting dates), and two letters of recommendation.

Electronic submission to: a.materny@jacobs-university.de

To be considered for this position, clearly refer to this announcement in your letter of intent.
Screening of applications will begin immediately until the position is filled.
