Switzerland : PhD position Dynamic triggering of earthquakes in dense granular media

Sponsored Links
The Chair of Building Physics is offering with starting January 2011
PhD position Dynamic triggering of earthquakes in dense granular media
When a dense granular layer under high shear stress is excited by vibration, a fluidization process is triggered leading to failure (slip) in an instable manner. Dynamic triggering thus may play an important role in the initiation or nucleation of earthquakes, landslides, avalanches and other technological applications like fluidized beds.
This project aims at unravelling the particle mechanics of dense granular media, with special attention to the triggering of the shear-driven fluidization process. The project consists in the integration of computational modelling, based upon Discrete Element Method (DEM) numerical simulations, and laboratory investigations, to be performed in collaboration with leading international Research Groups at LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory) and PSU (Penn state University). Imaging methods such as X-ray micro-tomography will be used to build up the numerical models on the actual geometrical and physical features of the laboratory systems.

Candidates should have master’s degree in civil, mechanical, geotechnical engineering, physics, materials science, geosciences, computational science, applied mathematics or a similar discipline. Fluency in English is required. Special consideration will be given to candidates with knowledge and/or research experience in continuum mechanics and computational modelling, particularly in discrete element method. The position will be supervised by Prof. Jan Carmeliet, Chair of Building Physics ETHZ and Dr. Michele Griffa, Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA).

For further information please contact Dr. Michele Griffa, michele.griffa@empa.ch
