Title: Statistical and computational methods in genetic epidemiology

Description: Advances in technology which allow typing of millions of markers simultaneously have revolutionized gene mapping in human genetics, making it one of the most exciting and fast moving fields in science. Genetic studies are done in our laboratory by using statistical and computational methods to link disease and trait phenotypes to high density genetic data. The successful applicant will develop and apply methods for conducting and interpreting genetic association studies (gene-based analysis, pathway analysis, genetic risk profiling).

Areas of interest include ophthalmology (several ongoing studies – so far in 2010 we have identified novel genes underlying glaucoma, short-sightedness, optic nerve size and corneal thickness), cancer (multiple studies in melanoma, ovarian cancer, including a number of new genome-wide methylation studies) and psychiatry.

The student will be based in the genetic epidemiology department (http://genepi.qimr.edu.au ) at QIMR, Brisbane. QIMR is one of the largest medical research institutes in the southern hemisphere, with programs in areas such as cellular and molecular sciences, epidemiology and population health, cancer biology, biotechnology, infectious diseases and vaccine development. The genetic epidemiology department is the single largest grouping at QIMR and employs several internationally renowned researchers in the field.

Research Areas:
Statistical Genetics, Genetic Epidemiology, Bioinformatics.
Suitable first degree/background:
Applicants must hold at least a second class honours degree and/or relevant Masters degree in
statistics, biological sciences, mathematics, computer science or a related field. Knowledge of genetics advantageous but not essential. Biological sciences applicants must be able to demonstrate some knowledge of statistics. If English is not your first language then you must supply a recognised competency score (see http://www.maths.uq.edu.au/postgraduate/phd/PGHandbook.pdf  )

To apply see

In your application please
i) Write (at least) a paragraph on why you want to undertake a PhD in statistical genetics
ii) Describe your research interests
ii) Indicate your level of competence in statistics, in computing/programming and in biology/genetics
iii) Include details of at least 2 academic referees
