Switzerland : Ph. D. position in the Soil Science Group of the Geographic Institute, University of Berne

Applications are invited for a Ph. D. position in the Soil Science Group (Prof. Wilcke) of the Geographic Institute, University of Berne, Switzerland (/giub/live/research/soil.htmlhttp://www.geography.unibe.ch/lenya).

The position is fully funded for three years by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) are known to be more mobile and some are more toxic than their parent PAHs and are therefore a subject of current research interest. The overall aim of the project is to better understand the concentrations, sources and fate of OPAHs in soil. Specific objectives of this project include; (1) further development of an existing analytical method to measure OPAHs in soil, (2) application of the method to screen several background and contaminated soils and to study the fate of these compounds in soil (3) investigate the sources (combustion vs. post-emission transformation) of these compounds with the help of compound specific is otope analysis and finally (4) to study the degradation kinetics of PAHs and the carbon and hydrogen stable isotope fractionation during chemical and biological degradation. The project will be realized in close collaboration with a postdoctoral fellow.

Requirements: We are seeking for highly motivated candidates with strong background in organic trace analysis. Experience in sample preparation and measurement techniques like ASE, SPE, GPC, GC/MS or LC-MS is an advantage. Applicants are expected to have an M. Sc./Diplom or equivalent in Chemistry, Geoecology, Environmental Science, Geology, Soil Science, Physical Geography, or related Natural Sciences.
