The research areas covered by the Doctoral Programme in Biology, Geography and Geology
(BGG) are traditionally strong fields at the University of Turku. The Doctoral Programme creates a multidisciplinary framework for natural scientific research on humans, populations and
the environment. The research fields are also connected by The University of Turku Laboratory
of Geoinformatics (UTU-LCC) as well as by the research and teaching activities at the field
stations of The Centre for Environmental Research of the University of Turku (CERUT). The

Application period and what can be applied for

From 1 September to 18 September 2015, the Doctoral Programme in Biology, Geography
and Geology accepts applications for:

-The right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Turku
-A fixed term doctoral candidate position

The doctoral candidate position begins on 1 January 2016 and it can be applied for a maximum
of 4 years. The position is primarily intended for full-time doctoral dissertation research,
and the aim is to complete the doctoral degree in four years. Such duties assigned to a doctoral candidate that are not related to the doctoral dissertation research must not compromise the full-time doctoral dissertation research, and can be at most 5% (80 h) of the annual working time of the doctoral candidate. The 5% rule does not apply to such teaching that benefits
the doctoral candidate in the form of ECTS credits imbedded in the doctoral degree. The salary
is based on job demands levels 2–4 in the salary system of Finnish universities for teaching
and research personnel. It consists of a task-specific salary component, which is 1972,55 –
2462,01€ / month, and a component based on personal performance, which is at most 46,3%
of the task-specific salary component. The position has a probation period of four months.
