Norway : Ph.D. Research Fellow, SCIBE Research Project

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design calls for applications to the full-time position as Ph.D. research fellow for a three year period (1 August 2011 to 30 July 2014). The research fellow will be part of a large research project called Scarcity and Creativity in the Built Environment (SCIBE) funded by the European Union, HERA Program.

The aim of the SCIBE proposal is to explore the relationship between scarcity and creativity in the context of the built environment by investigating how conditions of scarcity might affect the creativity of the different actors involved in the production of architecture and urban design, and how design-led innovation could improve the built environment in the future. The project is being jointly developed by research teams in London, Vienna, and Oslo.

The research fellow will be an integral part of the SCIBE Oslo team and will be expected to carry out a significant amount of the field work (questionnaires, interviews, census work, archival work, etc.) which this research project requires. Whereas the nature of the field work is defined by the needs of the SCIBE research project and we expect it to take around one and one-half years, the rest of the three years period will be used by the research fellow to develop her/his doctoral dissertation. The direction which the dissertation takes and its relation to the field work carried out for the SCIBE project, will be entirely up to the doctoral candidate in consultation with her/his supervisors.

The Ph.D. position is based either at AHOs Institute of Architecture or the Institute of Urbanism and Landscape and requires full time residence throughout the three year period, including participation in the research education program.

Requirements:
Applicants must hold a Master’s Degree or equivalent in a field of relevance to the SCIBE project. Preference will be given to applicants that:

• Have undertaken research in a field relevant to the SCIBE project.
• Have experience of field-work and/or archival work.
• Have published work.
• Are fluent in Norwegian and English.

• A letter of application describing why the applicant feels qualified for this position (two A4 pages maximum).
• A fully completed application form (see below).
• A Curriculum Vitae (contact details, summary of education, positions and academic work, academic publications, design work, competencies in software etc.) especially highlighting the experiences relevant to this task.
• Copies of educational certificates, transcript of records and letters of recommendation.
• List of publications and academic work that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee, if not included in the CV.
• Examples of work written (preferably published) by the applicant. Three works maximum.
• Names and contact details of 3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail address and telephone number)
• Foreign applicants must attach an explanation of their university’s grading system. Please remember that all documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language.

Position & Salary:
PhD Research Fellow (SKO 1017), pay grade: 48 (383 700,- NOK)

From the salary there will be a mandatory deduction of the 2% as contribution to the State Pension Fund. Normal employment conditions for state employees apply for the position. AHO has its own company health service.
